Nilsson was hired to write the music for Popeye including Olive Oyl’s ballad, He Needs Me. A really lovely demo of Shelley singing the track exists on the newer edition of the Popeye soundtrack. I’ll share in my stories.
Since the release of Popeye, He Needs Me has snuck its way into pop culture. Shelley’s recording is featured in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love (2002), it also appears in a 2011 Nike commercial, and pop star Carly Rae Jepsen even sampled the tune in her song Everything He Needs. It’s also been trending on TikTok in recent months. Shelley and Nilsson made a timeless tune that is soft, vulnerable, delicate, and relatable.
