Loved by so many children for her years as The Romper Room Lady, Miss Beverly.
This Chicago Tribune Magazine cover captures her light, her charm, her joy and how much she loved inspiring and teaching children.
She was on Romper Room from 1962-1967, decades (ok, years) before I was born.
In those days, you couldn’t say the word “pregnant” on TV or even BE pregnant on tv. (Now, it seems, you can watch someone get pregnant on tv!)
So, she had to say “I am going to have a “Do-Bee” of my own.”
Do-Bee Don’t Bee were life-sized bees that would come to Romper Room to teach children about manners.
I have a feeling that whoever told her to tell the children she was going to have a “do-bee of her own’ was probably stoned. 😳
Anyway, my mom passed away in 2010, 2 weeks before her 80th birthday. She met my first son at 16 months old, and never met the 2nd son, but assured me, I would definitely have another.
She loved the theatre and made sure we saw every show that came through Chicago (even if it meant working as volunteer ushers- which we did).
She encouraged my love of the arts and supported my every dream. She also started every standing ovation I ever got since high school. 👏👏👏
One of our last moments together was me singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” to her and letting her know it was okay to let go.
Losing a parent is one of the toughest things I’ve gone through. But I know, that my mother’s love and light live on within me, and now, I get to continue to pass that along to my own children.
I am so thankful for all I learned from this beautiful soul. She wouldn’t want me to be sad today, she’d want me to celebrate, to sing, to dance, to live.
So, here’s to making the most of the life you’ve been given. As far as I know, you only get one.
I’m gonna turn on Judy Garland, and sing and dance, and who’s kidding who – probably bawl my eyes out.
No matter how you are feeling today, remember….
