Now big sis is American, but this is also useful to me because I’m not from here, not from anywhere on this land mass even anywhere in the Americas. If you add to that being raised by a Bajan mother, that means I’m an immigrant, a child of an immigrant, I’m culturally black as well as physically black. There is a MASSIVE difference of experience when adding to each of those categories of demographic. It means not only do I not want to, but I can’t centre a decent amount of WYT culture from here, I can only (if it is authentic to me) reference what WHT culture I was exposed to back in the UK. Of course I want to centre my experience as an artist which is largely a diasporic experience of black culture from UK, US, Africa and the Caribbean. So obviously, I’m so excited to read a book that speaks to me and is especially relevant to all marginalised groups when negotiating the power structures that exist.
