Zali Stegall Instagram – The Net Zero Authority will play an important role in supporting a just transition to renewable energy, but in its current format it is too limited. I moved some amendments to:
• Clearly define Net Zero,
• Broaden the range of workers who would be supported,
• Give the authority the teeth and powers to act with independence,
• Ensure there are appropriately qualified people on the board, and
• Include a phase out plan for fossil fuel projects.
The government did not accept my amendments so I also moved an amendment to suggest the government change the name to the Coal and Gas Fired Worker Transition Authority Bill to more correctly refer to the limited range of workers the bill will support. Otherwise the name of this authority misleads workers in thinking that the government has a jobs plan for them. It’s greenwashing.
