Judge has harsh words for the man who fatally shot Kaylin Gillis

A judge had some harsh words for 66-year-old Kevin Monahan during his sentencing for shooting and killing 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis after the car she was a passenger in mistakenly pulled into his rural upstate New York driveway in April 2023.

The defense argued that what happened was a terrible accident. However, prosecutors argued that Monahan acted recklessly. Washington County Judge Adam Michelini ultimately issued the maximum sentence of 25 years to life for Monahan. He also issued a concurrent sentence of up to 7 years in prison for reckless endangerment and a consecutive term of up to 4 years for tampering with evidence.

‘Any remorse you have isn’t from the harm you’ve caused, the only regret you have is that you’re finally facing the consequences for your actions. You murdered Kaylin Gillis. You shot at a car full of people, and you didn’t care what would happen. And you repeatedly lied about it. You deserve to spend the maximum amount of time in prison allowable under our law. And I don’t make this decision because it’s easy, I make it because it’s what’s deserved, I make it because it’s what’s just,’ said Michelini.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) - Leaders are asking the public to help a family who is already going through the unimaginable. The story is hard for some to listen to, and it has impacted not only Mahogany Jackson’s family and friends, but total strangers who were shaken by this shocking crime.

Family and friends gathered Thursday evening, Feb. 29, to honor Jackson’s life and legacy after police say she was held against her will and tortured before she was killed.

Birmingham Police have arrested seven people in connection with her death, and have said some of these people recorded parts of the attack on Jackson. We have received reports that the video is being found online.

That video was described by law enforcement as “heinous” and “disgusting.”

Jefferson County’s district attorney is pleading with the public to not share the video out of respect to the family.

“There’s some aspects of this situation I know are devastating to that family, and to see it reenacted on a video - it almost places you there, and then to see people share it over and over, and I know some people may be sharing it for entertainment value or whatever, which is sad in and of itself,” said Danny Carr. “At the end of the day, have some respect for them as well, have some respect for the family, have some respect for Mahogany.”

Police said that they are confident that they have all the suspects in this case in custody.

It wasn’t until I was in college at Michigan State that I realized how little a lot of white people knew about Black people, and frankly, their lack of curiosity about us in general. It was then that I also realized that white people were completely capable of designing a life where they didn’t have to know anything about Black people at all. Black people have had to “learn” white people because so much of our survival and existence depends on what we know about them.

So while this is amusing, it’s also an unfortunate reminder of how precarious our space in the world can be.

In a sweeping 36-2 vote, the Kentucky State Senate granted the right to collect child support for unborn children. The legislation, Senate Bill 110, garnered bipartisan support and is now advancing to the House. According to AP News, this bill’s passing comes after Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled that embryos are human beings. Since then, several of Alabama’s IVF clinics have paused their services.

If the bill becomes law, an expectant mother can begin collecting child support funds from the state at the moment of conception to cover pregnancy related expenses. Senator Whitney Westerfield (R), a pro-life activist, introduced the bill, saying: “Even if you didn’t believe life begins at conception, I don’t think anybody can reasonably dispute there are costs involved with being pregnant.” Contrarily, pro-choice activists say they see this as a possible set-up for anti-abortion lawmakers to reshape the bill to advocate that “personhood” starts at the fetal stage.

In a 2024 report done by Gitnux Marketdata, 9 in 10 child support cases are fathers paying to support mothers. As of 2016, the total amount of child support due in the U.S are $33.7 billion with only 37.2% of the children receiving child support living with a single mother.

In 2022, American Progress reported that roughly 15% of all Black fathers have been incarcerated at some point for not paying child support while the overall national average is only 5%. Child support enforcement policies also allow garnishing two-thirds of the absent parent’s wages, revoking their passports and suspending their drivers’ licenses or professional licenses.

I’ve turned down a flood of interviews over the past week or so. The requests have been pouring in and I hear its a great opportunity to “grow my reach”… but that’s not a motivator for me. I’ve got to protect my mental health. More than that, I dont trust mainstream media to allow us to really tell our story. I understand crisis sells, but I don’t want to engage if they won’t call me to also celebrate Haiti’s wins. With that being said, one of the only journalists I trust to tell our story is Vladimir Duthiers. Although it’s short, his summary today was excellent. My favorite summary from a journalist so far, he packed so many great points in there. I’ve enjoyed hearing from academics and experts such as Dr. Jemima Pierre and Jake Johnston, but this response by Vladimir Duthiers is the best summary from a main stream media personality.
