Caption : This is just another reminder that deciding where to put your money matters! ALWAYS research banking fees and interest rates. Here are some banks I do like: 1️⃣ Ally Bank: Currently, I have my emergency savings in their online high-yield savings accounts. You have no over-draft fees, monthly fees, and no minimums. They don’t always offer the highest rates, but come close! 2️⃣ Credit Unions: I love credit unions and have both checking and savings with a local credit union! Bigger banks might offer more products, but they aren’t worth the member-owned service you get with a credit union. Of course, there might be better options if you travel internationally or need access to a bank nationwide. 3️⃣ I have heard great things about the Discover Cashback Debit checking account but have yet to use it myself. This account has no fees or minimum balance requirements, no-fee check ordering, and fee-free overdraft protection. They also offer over 60,000 free ATMs. What bank do you use and love? #personalfinanceforwomen #bankingawareness #savingmoney #checkingaccount #moneytips #thebudgetmomLikes : 32160

Caption : Of course, this is not my ENTIRE story. Marrying my best friend, losing my mom, and having a baby are all things that have happened in just the last two years. But these are stepping stones in my journey that have led me to where I am today. One of the quotes that has always stayed with me is: “Every expert was once a beginner.” And it wasn’t too long ago that I was a beginner with finances and my budget. This financial journey is about starting somewhere and making a step every day to get where you want to be. I am still here, taking those steps in my own life. Thank you for letting me share those steps with you and allowing me to be part of your journey! In the comments, share when you started your financial journey! Mine really started in 2012! #thebudgetmom #tbmfamily #financialjourney #moneyplan #moneymotivation #moneymindset #financialgoals #debtfreegoals #debtfreejourney #personalfinanceforwomen #nojudgementzone #financialfreedomLikes : 23552

Caption : This was a hard weekly recap to share, but it’s the truth. I have been struggling a lot lately with grief and guilt. I think these two emotions are very common yet not talked about enough. For Easter, my family visited the farm for the first time since my mom passed, and I have no words to describe the pain I felt from the very second we left the house.’ I was making a drive that I have made a thousand times in my life, but this time, my mom would not be there. It felt unfamiliar, sad, and downright impossible. I know I will never stop grieving my mom, but I am still very much in pain, and it hasn’t gotten easier. I still text her every day, listen to her voice messages on repeat, and wake up hoping it was just a nightmare. I wish I could say my life is all rainbows and sprinkles, but it’s not. I wake up and tell myself I am going to do the best I can and, most importantly, be the person my mom would be proud of. That’s all you can do. That’s enough. Thank you for allowing me to share this journey with you. Caption : Discovering your WHY is one of the most important steps on your financial and life journey. As The Budget Mom, I believe it’s the foundation of everything. Your WHY is the guiding force that shapes your decisions and fuels your passions. Life is full of changes and challenges, and your WHY will evolve with you. After losing my mom, my sense of purpose shifted dramatically. I realized I could never fill her shoes, but I could carry her torch into the future, honoring her memory by living a life that reflects her values and love. It’s okay if your WHY changes—it means you’re growing. Each life experience, especially loss, highlights how short life is and how important it is to live it fully. Embrace the changes, let them shape your WHY, and use it to guide you toward a more meaningful and fulfilled life. When the pain of losing my mom becomes unbearable, and the reality of her being gone is heart-crushing, I remember that she lives through me. To everyone experiencing change and finding that it redefines your WHY, embrace it and let it happen. XOXO, MikoLikes : 10861

Caption : Today, I want to celebrate a very special person! It’s Ryen’s birthday, and I wanted to take the time to acknowledge her impact on my life. I met Ryen at a Starbucks in Spokane Valley in 2020 when she interviewed for my first job posting as my assistant. Before she applied for the position, Ryen was a follower of The Budget Mom. Over 500 people applied for the job, and I conducted over 150 interviews. I followed my mom’s advice to hire based on someone’s heart and values, and it was the best decision I have ever made for my business. Little did I know back then that Ryen would not just be my assistant but also one of my dearest friends. Ryen is kind, patient, understanding, and funny, and I cherish our daily phone calls. This year marks five years that Ryen has worked for The Budget Mom, taking on every role and becoming absolutely indispensable. Besides ALL the hats she wears (which is totally unfair to her), she has also helped me navigate some of the most significant decisions I have made for my company. Ryen has changed the quality of my life, allowing me to step away and have more freedom and time with my family. I will be forever grateful that we met over four years ago. Happy birthday, my sweet friend. I see you. I appreciate you. I love you. #thebudgetmom #tbmfamily #employeeappreciationLikes : 8399

Caption : When I set out to learn a new skill, I don’t just do things to cross it off my list. I set out to understand it and MASTER it. This is something that really hit me this week. It’s true. When I want to learn something, I become obsessed, and then I set out not only to do it but to absolutely master it. It was like this with budgeting, baking, gardening, soap making, raising chickens, and now sourdough. I don’t stop trying, learning, and growing. This can be a good thing and a curse. Sometimes, I am too hard on myself, and my obsession becomes so great that I put things that should be a priority on the back burner. It means that sometimes I overwork myself, then burn out and stop doing anything. It’s fantastic to have a lot of hobbies and passions, but it’s also essential to define “balance” in your life. I am still working on that! I hope you have an amazing weekend! #thebudgetmom #dontgiveuponyourself #sourdoughjourney #tbmfamily #momboss #smallbussinessowner #moneygoals #moneymotivation #weeklyrecap #mealplanning #worklifebalance #passionandpurpose #homesteaddreamsLikes : 6139

Caption : Wow, there are many lessons this week, but more importantly, many truths. Being a stay-at-home mom is different from what I thought it would be. It’s also more challenging than I could have ever imagined. It has tested my patience and my ability to handle my emotions. Sometimes, I don’t think I could mentally handle having another baby. The thought scares me, if I am being honest, and saying that out loud makes me feel bad. I am going to take more time to heal because a C-section delivery and having a baby are no joke! It’s not just physically life-changing; it’s also mentally challenging. Being a mom is the best job in the world, and staying at home with my children is the biggest blessing I could ask for, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Caption : 10 years ago, I went through a McDonalds drive-through and financed a $1.09 ice cream cone. I used my credit card to buy an ice cream cone for my son because I was afraid that my debit card would decline. I didn’t even know if I had $2 in my checking account. That’s an experience that changed my life. That was the day I decided I was going to fight for something different. A better life with my kids. Today, my life is completely different. After Dante’s 9-month checkup and finding out he did not need shots at this appointment, we decided to go out for breakfast. For many, going out to eat on a whim doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. For me, it means the world because I remember what my life was like not too long ago. There isn’t one day that goes by where I don’t think about my life over 10 years ago. There isn’t one day when I’m not thankful I found the courage and dedication to change my life for the better. If you are here wanting more from your life, my only advice would be, don’t wait! You CAN change your finances and your relationship with money. One of the biggest blessings of starting my debt-free and financial journey is no longer worrying about my finances or wondering if I even have the money to go out with my family. Today, we went out to breakfast, and I didn’t HAVE TO put it on my credit card. For me, that will always be a win. Keep fighting. Keep pushing forward! Trust me, it’s so worth it. #thebudgetmom #budgetbypaycheck #personalfinance #debtfreegoals #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourneyLikes : 5056

Caption : On January 14, 2019, I paid off my last debt and became 100% debt free. I’ll never forget how excited I was in that moment. Now, 6 years later, I want to reshare that video—not just to celebrate 6 years of being debt-free, but to reflect on everything I learned WHILE paying off debt and AFTER becoming debt-free. DURING my debt payoff journey, I learned that: 💡 Every small payment matters. Even when it feels insignificant, every dollar you put toward your goal moves you forward. Those small wins add up. 💡 Setbacks don’t mean failure. I had moments where progress stalled, unexpected bills popped up, or motivation waned. What mattered most wasn’t how fast I moved but that I didn’t give up. 💡 It’s not just about numbers. The most important work happened in my mind. Learning how to manage money, control emotions, and stay disciplined was the real transformation. But AFTER becoming debt-free, I realized: 💡 Debt doesn’t define you. You are more than your mistakes, your financial past, or your current balance. Your journey is about growth, not guilt. 💡 There’s no finish line in personal finance. Paying off debt was a huge goal, but it didn’t mean I was done. Life kept going, and so did my financial journey—learning to invest, build wealth, and spend mindfully. 💡 Freedom looks different than you think. I thought becoming debt-free would erase all my stress, but true freedom isn’t just financial—it’s how you live, how you feel, and what you prioritize. If you’re in the middle of your debt journey, I want you to know this: 👉 Every small step matters. Every setback is part of the process. And when you become debt-free, it won’t be the end—it’ll be the start of something greater. 5 years later, I’m still learning. Still growing. Still applying the lessons I learned on my journey five years ago. Thank you to my entire #tbmfamily for being on this journey with me! If you’re on a debt-free journey, too, drop a 💪in the comments! It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress and working as a team every step of the way. 💪 Happy anniversary to my amazing husband—here’s to many more years of love and teamwork! 💖 What’s your biggest lesson in managing money with a partner? #MarriageAndMoney #Teamwork #FinancialGoalsLikes : 4822

Caption : This year, we decided to go back to doing pre-orders. That means you can order the new Budget By Paycheck® workbook on AUGUST 20TH, but they won’t start shipping until SEPTEMBER 20TH. Why do we do pre-orders? The Budget Mom is a small business with only a few employees. Due to the HUGE influx of orders for our BBP launches, our small team needs time to package and prepare orders. We will be offering a brand new SMALL SIZE this year (with binding 8 3/4 inches wide X 9 1/2 inches tall), which will be $44. Our full size (with binding 10 inches wide x 11 inches tall) will be $48. Due to the popularity and high demand for our BBP workbooks, we can’t guarantee stock for our launches! #thebudgetmom #budgetbypaycheckworkbook #budgetbypaycheckmethod #budgetbycheck #budgetplanner Do you like the new changes to the BBP® Workbook?Likes : 4242

Caption : This weekend, our baby boy turned ONE. It’s hard to believe we have a toddler when I feel like we just brought him home from the hospital. Around January, I started saving all leftover cash from my variable spending envelopes for his birthday. The amounts were sporadic, but I saved around $400 by the end of June. Chris also bought some of the cutest baseball decorations and keepsakes for our Rookie of the Year-themed party, like a custom wood bat, ball, and jersey. So cute! The decoration costs included things like the highchair garland, backdrop and balloon arch, cake topper, and 12-month photo board. The biggest expense for food was the grocery haul for the BBQ. We went with hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and potato salad. I baked and decorated the sugar cookies, smash cake, and cupcakes. The largest present we got Dante was an electric ride-on tractor that cost around $200. If we hadn’t already saved the money, we would have never spent so much on a birthday. I am so grateful I learned how to use sinking funds and that I could give my baby boy the best FIRST birthday without guilt. What has been your favorite birthday theme? I did a dinosaur theme for James’s first birthday and LOVED it! #Budgeting #MoneyExpert #FinancialTips #FirstBirthday #BirthdayBudget #SinkingFunds #BudgetingHacks #MoneyManagement #FamilyFinance #SmartSpending #FrugalLiving #PersonalFinanceLikes : 4122

Caption : We talk so much about budgeting, saving, and cutting back—but we rarely talk about how to spend money in a way that actually supports the life we’re living. As a stay-at-home working mom, I’ve learned that spending money intentionally doesn’t make me irresponsible. It makes me self-aware. It means I’m tuning out the guilt, the judgment, and the noise from social media—and choosing what works for my life. Here are just a few things I spend money on without shame—because sanity, joy, and rest deserve space in the budget, too. This is your permission slip to spend on the things that matter to you—even if they aren’t social media-perfect. What’s one thing you spend money on without guilt (and refuse to apologize for)? Caption : An expensive flank steak and over $300 later, I finished meal planning, prepping, and grocery shopping. I’m making four recipes next week with a plan to have one leftover day. For the past six months, I have tried desperately to keep my food budget at $600/mo. Today, I’ve realized I will have to increase it by $100/mo starting next month. That means another area of my budget will decrease. You are constantly making tradeoff decisions with your dollars, even when you don’t realize it. You spend less in one area so you can spend more in another. Have you had to increase your food budget lately? It absolutely sucks! 😡 On the bright side, my meals are planned and ready to go! #mealplanning #budgetgoals #mealplan #mealprep #groceryshopping #grocerybudget #foodbudget #budgeting101Likes : 3521

When I bought my home with cash, I remember feeling this huge sense of relief. I had spent years saving for it, working toward that goal, and it felt like I finally owned my home. But looking back at my property taxes over the past six years honestly surprised me. Property taxes are something most homeowners do not fully think about when they buy a house. Most of the focus is on the purchase price or the mortgage payment. But property taxes are one of the biggest ongoing costs of homeownership and they can change significantly over time depending on home values, reassessments, improvements to the property, and local levies. This experience forced me to really understand how property taxes work and what they actually fund in our communities. It is one of those parts of homeownership that many people do not fully think about until they are living it. After months of recognizing patterns and coming to the realization that my food budget was just not working with today’s prices, I decided to pivot and shift. In an article for CBS News, I read that food prices are 25% higher now than in January 2020. If I used that math, I would increase my food budget to $625. But that doesn’t include an older boy who is now a preteen eating WAY MORE, and our decision to eat a little healthier. For the past three months, I have spent around $800-$900/mo on food, including eating out and grocery shopping (Chris pays for much of our eating out). So, I increased our food budget to $900/mo going forward. I still need to make some more permanent tweaks to my budget, but at least April is mapped out and finalized, and that feels really good. Anyone else have to increase their food budget?! #foodbudget #budgeting #personalfinanceforwomen #budgetbypaycheck #thebudgetmom #grocerybudgetLikes : 3385

Caption : The lesson: Believe in yourself more! It took me five years to overcome my fear of running in my first official race (besides Bloomsday), but I finally did it! I finished my first 10k! I have run longer distances in the past, but it’s always been treadmill running. I was scared of the weather, the natural incline, and everything I could not control off the treadmill. I wish I had believed in myself more and signed up for the half marathon. I felt extremely strong passing the finish line, and I knew I had it in me to do the additional miles. At mile 4, I had my fastest mile ever: 9.29. I have always been a slow runner. Usually, I run a 12-13-minute mile, but yesterday, I finished with a time of 1:10:12. I’m proud of this! The best part was seeing my husband and son waiting for me as I crossed the finish line and running this race for my mom (which I will continue to do for every race in the future). When I got tired or started to doubt myself, I placed my hand over my heart, right where I placed my mom’s photo button. I found strength in knowing she was there with me. Next time, I will believe in myself more and sign up for the half marathon next year. Until then, I want to have fun and practice doing more 10K runs! #yesyoucan #runningmakesmehappy #believeinyourself #first10k #ididthat #foryoumom #irunformymomLikes : 3112

You have to be ready to face hard truths and correct spending habits and patterns. You have to be willing to learn more about yourself because it’s a lifestyle change and CHOICE. Caption : @thebudgetmom It’s not about the eggs. It’s about how you see money. Most people look at $15 and think, “That’s not much.” Then they spend it on an impulse buy they’ll forget tomorrow. Wealth builders think differently. They look at that same $15 and see what it could become — an opportunity to grow, invest, and build something lasting. Because wealth isn’t built by doing extraordinary things once — it’s built by doing small, ordinary things consistently. So the next time you catch yourself saying, “It’s just $15,” ask yourself: What could it be instead? Caption : If you want to be prepared for an upcoming holiday or expense, start now and with what you can—even if it’s $10/mo. For example, if you save $25/mo for the rest of 2024, you will have $250 for Christmas. If you save $50/mo, you will have $500! That’s better than $0. When you know you have a holiday, event, or expense in the future, start saving as early as possible. Give yourself as much time as you can to prepare. Heck, start saving for Valentine’s Day in 2025. I have! I have a holiday goal of $2,000, which includes Christmas and Black Friday shopping. I started saving for this goal in January and I am saving $182/mo to reach my goal by November 2024. Plan, prepare, and save! #moneygoals #sinkingfunds #thebudgetmom #savingmoney #savingtips #savingsgoalsLikes : 2714

Caption : The Budget by Paycheck Method was created after my failed attempts at budgeting. For the longest time, I thought I was a failure. It took me awhile to understand that I wasn’t a failure, the systems and methods I was using were failing me. They weren’t for me and that’s okay. I made it my mission to find something that clicked. I took parts of other budgeting methods that worked, and added them to my budgeting process. Here are the steps to the BBP Method: 1. Find your why- Why are you on this financial journey? 2. Track spending- Bring financial awareness into your life. This is realizing your true spending and where your dollars go month to month. 3. Identify regular bills- What bills do you HAVE to pay each month? These include things like rent, utilities, minimum debt payments, etc. 4. Cash envelopes- This is where you also identify your variable expenses or those expenses that fluctuate each month. Once they’re identified, you set a realistic amount on how much you want to spend on each of those categories. 5. Budget calendar- When you think about your budget, it’s easy to remember your bills, but what about all of the other life events that cost money? Your budget calendar will be your guiding light when planning out your paychecks. 6. Prioritize savings goals- Figure out what matters most to you and tackle your goals in order of importance. 7. Create a debt plan- Are you wanting to pay off the lowest balances first? Or those with the highest interest rate? 8. Paycheck budget tracker- This is where you map out each paycheck and figure out what paycheck will pay what bills. 9. Tweak and perfect- Remember, the first budget you create isn’t set in stone. Tweak and perfect what might not work for you. Although this method and process might seem overwhelming, tackling one step at a time will set you up in the best way. Remember, your financial journey isn’t only about the numbers. It’s also about learning about yourself and why you spend money the way you do. If you’re looking for where to start, be sure to click the link in my bio to access my free budgeting course. Raise your hand if you use the Budget by Paycheck Method! 🙋♀️Likes : 2501

Here’s to a community built on support, trust, and non-judgment—where genuine connections, empathy, kindness, and grace foster success. 💼💬 #TrustOverGossip #SuccessJourney #FinanceCommunity #thebudgetmom #tbmfamily #financialsupport #moneymotivation #financialjourney #personalfinanceforwomenLikes : 2482

Reflecting on my 9 year self-discovery journey, I’ve realized that success isn’t just about numbers. It’s about the people we choose to walk alongside. The saying, “Surround yourself with those who inspire, challenge, and support you. The energy you absorb from others shapes your own path,” is profoundly true. Caption : Starting something is exciting. But building something that actually lasts is very different. What most people don’t see is how many uncomfortable decisions, doubts, and adjustments happen behind the scenes while something is growing. You are figuring things out in real time. You are learning what works, what doesn’t, and sometimes learning the hard way. There were many moments while building my businesses where things didn’t go the way I expected. Sometimes growth was slow. Sometimes I questioned whether what I was doing even mattered. But every time I stayed long enough to learn something from the experience. Looking back, those lessons shaped the way I build things today. I will be answering your business questions in an upcoming post, so make sure to save, like, or share this post so I continue to show up in your feed and you don’t miss it. #thebudgetmom #smallbusinessjourney #womeninbusiness #entrepreneurmindset #buildsomethingmeaningfulLikes : 2451
