I will remind myself that in these photos I was happy, relaxed, healing from a slipped disc and totally at ease with my body. I will not look back and think “ why wasn’t I happy in myself and my body? There’s nothing fucking wrong with the way I look.” I’ve done that so many times in my life - looked at my old photos and thought “ why weren’t you confident in your body….you look fucking great.” I’m done with that self destructing and self limiting bullshit! Saira Khan Instagram - My daughter came home from school the other day saying that a girl had googled me and found photos in a magazine where I had done a shoot showing off my body and as a result called me a “PORN STAR”. I have to also share that this girl is a Muslim, she took 2 days off school to celebrate EID , no doubt her family fasted and prayed to God and she’s probably prays at home - reciting the words of the holy Quran. My daughter is 13 years old and goes to an all girls school. The rumour spread by this girl has upset her. I do not blame this girl for saying what she has, I blame her parents - children only act out what they see and hear at home - language and behaviour is absorbed by children. The reason I mention this child’s culture and religion is because I also was brought up in that very same environment where to see a woman celebrating her body and you immediately relate it to “sex” “shame” “guilt” “derogatory terms”. The problem is that so many women are so disconnected from loving their bodies that as they age, they are the ones that suffer the most from pain, illness and long term health issues! Here’s some facts for you : Compared to other religious groups, Muslims in the UK have the highest age‐standardised rate of reported ill health (13% for males, 16% for females) and disability (24% of females, 21% of males), with widespread poverty and deprivation. ( ncbi) As a 54 year old Asian woman, I have always been judged by the very people that look like me and share my religious and cultural heritage for what I “wear and look like” rather than what I do and have achieved. It does not bother me - part of healing is to let go of “what other people do” - this 13 year old girl is projecting her own unhappiness, jealousy, insecurities etc. One of the biggest personal freedoms I have achieved as a woman is to wear what I like, when I like and to feel amazing in my skin without any feelings of shame, guilt or fear. Seeing brown women confident in their bodies, celebrating their health and skin is still a taboo subject … but until you see badass women like me kick that taboo down, the backward mindset will prevail. #bodyconfience #woman #badass

Saira Khan Instagram - I got so depressed today when I caught a glimpse of my side profile!! I wanted to cry! This bloody menopause, trying to get back into fitness after an injury and feeling helpless because I feel like I’m doing what I can but just not seeing or feeling the results. Nothing in my wardrobe fits!! My clothes give me anxiety and stress. Despite all the above I am not going to get down and depressed ! I am going to stop having too many unrealistic expectations of myself and start to make changes that allow me to enjoy being me. First up !! Get rid of all the clothes that I’ve kept for “when I’ve lost weight I’ll get into that” . So if anyone else is feeling like this … not connecting with their thicker waist… you are not alone !! But I am bloody determined to feel good in my skin and not be defined by the size of a dress.x So I’m on a journey of reinventing my style and embracing my curves! Saira Khan Instagram - I always believe that when the news is full of hatred and divisiveness it’s our responsibility to counteract that with news of love, hope and togetherness. I am a brown British woman from a Muslim family. My husband is a white British man from a Christian Background. We’ve been married 20years this December. We are both British. English. We have both throughout our life seen the Far Right raise its ugly head. As a couple we have seen the Islamophobia that has crept into our society. But what we have both realised is this : unless you are strong in yourself, respect yourself, take full responsibility for your circumstances, question what is really going on and come to your own conclusions - you will be manipulated into thinking how the media/politicians want you to think. My husband and I came together because of what we had in common and our differences is what made our relationship interesting. Here’s an interesting Fact: Around 677,000 people in the UK now define themselves as mixed. Mixed race people account for 1.2% of the total population and 14% of the ethnic minority population are mixed race, according to SocietyGuardian. This demographic is growing exponentially. I share this fact because there are many of us of different colours, cultures and religions coming together in relationships and in our everyday communities…this is hope, this is the good news and this is togetherness. Racists and fascists have had their day… but they’ve never won the day! Speak up for togetherness and be proud always to call out prejudice, discrimination, racism, inequality and hate. You cannot use the above to evoke violence …you have to raise your voice and peacefully change hate to love. You may call me a dreamer… but I’m not the only one. #love #peace #togetherness

Saira Khan Instagram - What I am seeing and reading about in the Uk is Far Right Extremist Terrorists - there is no excuse for this behaviour. You cannot call “Brown/ Black” people “terrorists”and “white” people “thugs” if they carry out the same violence and hate to innocent people in our country. We are dealing with “terrorists”. The politicians need to call it what it is and stop being divisive, ignorant and weak cowards. Call it what it is!! No excuses or justifications. As a British born woman of colour it is my duty to speak up and hold politicians accountable. I have called out Islamic terrorists on national TV and in the press when I was working in that field. The traditional Shalwaar Kameez - never wore them out as a kid growing up in the 80’s 90’s - I was so embarrassed of being different - also didn’t want to attract unnecessary racist remarks that were rampant at that time. Now I have no problem at all. Our country has changed, so much cross cultural adoption - wearing a long top with trousers not seen as “weird”. When I visit my mum, she much prefers seeing me dressed in traditional South Asian clothes - so out of respect I leave my skimpy stuff at home and bring out my beautiful modest clothes to please her. ❤️ We’ve come a long way in being tolerant …. Lots more progress to make, but let’s celebrate that we are moving forward in the right direction. I have no problem wearing my shalwaar kameez for the whole world to see - I wear it with pride. I have to also share that this girl is a Muslim, she took 2 days off school to celebrate EID , no doubt her family fasted and prayed to God and she’s probably prays at home - reciting the words of the holy Quran. My daughter is 13 years old and goes to an all girls school. The rumour spread by this girl has upset her. I do not blame this girl for saying what she has, I blame her parents - children only act out what they see and hear at home - language and behaviour is absorbed by children. The reason I mention this child’s culture and religion is because I also was brought up in that very same environment where to see a woman celebrating her body and you immediately relate it to “sex” “shame” “guilt” “derogatory terms”. The problem is that so many women are so disconnected from loving their bodies that as they age, they are the ones that suffer the most from pain, illness and long term health issues! Here’s some facts for you : Compared to other religious groups, Muslims in the UK have the highest age‐standardised rate of reported ill health (13% for males, 16% for females) and disability (24% of females, 21% of males), with widespread poverty and deprivation. ( ncbi) As a 54 year old Asian woman, I have always been judged by the very people that look like me and share my religious and cultural heritage for what I “wear and look like” rather than what I do and have achieved. It does not bother me - part of healing is to let go of “what other people do” - this 13 year old girl is projecting her own unhappiness, jealousy, insecurities etc. One of the biggest personal freedoms I have achieved as a woman is to wear what I like, when I like and to feel amazing in my skin without any feelings of shame, guilt or fear. I share this fact because there are many of us of different colours, cultures and religions coming together in relationships and in our everyday communities…this is hope, this is the good news and this is togetherness. The traditional Shalwaar Kameez - never wore them out as a kid growing up in the 80’s 90’s - I was so embarrassed of being different - also didn’t want to attract unnecessary racist remarks that were rampant at that time. Now I have no problem at all. Our country has changed, so much cross cultural adoption - wearing a long top with trousers not seen as “weird”.
