Shefali Shah Instagram - Thank you for all the love all of you (well most of you) are showering on ‘THREE OF US’ it’s humbling and overwhelming.
The interpretations you’ll have of the minutest nuance, registering a look, a line, a gesture, a scene. It shows how deeply the film has affected you.
This film was released in the theatres and it didn’t do well at all. But on OTT, even though it was released on the 2nd last day of 2023, a lot of you are touting it to be the best film of 2023 and that’s a proof of what came from our hearts, will and has touched yours. We created something in complete honesty, giving it our all, baring ourselves which brought on surface your thoughts and feelings, and unhindered truth.
Proving the strength of the connection between us and all of you even through a screen. And it just reinstates our faith in what we do, rather who we become, because you all believe it too. And we can’t begin to thank you enough for it.

Shefali Shah Instagram - I have to take you to the UDGAM of ‘THREE OF US’ the very beginning.

During the lock down was a zoom call, with a very soft spoken, tentative and absolutely unassuming @avinasharundhaware (whose work I admired tremendously.) It was very simple, He narrated to me a one line and I said yes. Bas! One of the many things Avinash and me agreed on was this isn’t a sad story of loss. It’s a happy story of discovery.

Then Joining us was an unimaginable, absolutely unexpected casting genius by Avinash. @jaideepahlawat as Pradeep and @swanandkirkire as Dipankar. I was thrilled, but also intrigued waiting to see how all three of us slid into their world.
And with me was my family, @pallavisymons @sandhyabellarae @imraj_gupta laughing, cracking jokes, us cooking together, food, stories, memories and moments. Sometimes of madness and sometimes of absolute tranquility.

I remember the first day of shoot, we had a very early morning call time. Moon’s night shift had still not ended, and the sun was still fast asleep, Driving to the location anxiety ridden I messaged Avinash…
“You know what you are doing na? Coz I don’t.”
And he replied “I don’t know either.”
(In retrospect he more than well knew what he was doing, I mean look at what he has created.)

While I was absolutely and blissfully lost and honestly that was the only way of finding Shailaja.
We never trespassed the world of “THREE OF US”. But we created some memories of our own. Finally all merging one into another. Not knowing now what is more real.

Shefali Shah Instagram - We had no such hashtags for our union. We didn’t have an event planner, dress designer, no florist, dance choreographer, videographer (which I regret till date) I didn’t even have a make up artist. We planned and executed everything on our own.

We picked a location, decided the menu, searched for and designed the mandap decor, our own clothes and we got married. Bas as simple as that.

We don’t have perfect pictures, we didnt look like a prince and princess. Yes the horse was milky white with long silky tresses absolutely magnificent but he belonged to the next door ka baraat. And we had danced so much at our sangeet we almost considered postponing our wedding to the day after but it was too late, food for 100 people (thanks to our parents) was cooked. By the end of the evening we weren’t jumping with joy, over flowing with romance or desperate to lay hands on each other. We were just exhausted, tired and dying to sleep. And that’s exactly what we did.

Over the years we have celebrated our union in multiple ways. First, just the two of us, then the four of us. And sometimes, many of us (friends and family).

We planned surprises for each other, gave gifts, flowers and letters (that’s me), cooked or ordered his favourite food.
Music, friends, parties. We have done it all.
But today, we choose to chill at home, just us.
It may not be the best way to celebrate an #anniversary but it is the best way to celebrate life. Life that is solid, rooted, persistent and forever.

It’s not as though I didn’t try. The plan was for all four of us to come here but, the first hurdle was to align dates of four people living in the same house under the same surname, probably as difficult as achieving celestial harmony where Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn align. (The next such alignment is due on 25th January 2025, make a note, must watch!)

One reluctant team member (no prizes for guessing who) tried endlessly for days to coordinate this collaboration. Dates were finalized, changed, & re-changed to suit everyone. The decision-making for the destination was left to our offspring. Big mistake.

In the span of a couple of hours, we traveled the world. From Rishikesh to Sri Lanka, Bali to Goa, Hampi to Pondicherry, and many more exotic places, we went back and forth in our heads. If this travel were counted in miles, it would have taken us halfway to any one of those destinations. After providing more options than the 20-course tasting menu at Noma, or a hypothetical 100-course menu, my prodigal son, without ceremony, announced he didn’t want to go anymore. And immediately, the other son followed suit, as did the father.

“Let’s chill at home together,” they said.
Together? The last time I saw all of us together was in the Diwali photograph. Upset would be the understatement of the century to describe how I felt.

So, I decided to go alone. But a decision like this does not come without its moral dilemmas. Ranging from doubt (Should I go? Or shouldn’t I?), guilt (How can I go alone without my family?), to major guilt (How can I spend so much on myself?).

I’m thankful to my parents for giving me middle-class values, but the problem is, those same values often undervalue me. According to them, anything besides food on our plate, a roof over our head, & clothes on our body is an exorbitant indulgence, and definitely invalid for a woman who chooses to travel alone without her family.

“What will you even do alone? How will you enjoy without your family? Isn’t it too expensive for one person? What a waste, it would’ve been so much better with everyone.”
