Thandiwe Newton Instagram - My kid came across this cute blue bottom lizard (I love lizards) on the sand. We picked it up to find a safe spot for it - it wound up spending a full hour on my chest! We had to take it (‘Brooch’) off to release it into some brush. I loved it for a while. But then let it go. Of course :) I hope you’re having as peaceful a Sunday as is possible for you. Tomorrow I plan to try and help make Sundays a bit better for people who can’t make it happen for themselves. And of course, I mean every day. Trying. Thank you all, everyone, for trying. Xxxxx

My one-kit-wonder for so many years, plopped in her car seat from make up trailers to locations, pouting and brows furrowed in a face that you knew was going to stop traffic with its twinkling sweet death stare. She remained cross at every injustice (“horrible people”😋) aware of her self worth (“don’t worry Mummy, I’m way cooler than you when you were 12”), even at 4 she was determined to outsize her older sister (“Rip, to mice I am massive”) always supportive of my raging against the machine (“Here she goes again”) and even at 9, an advocate of passive resistance (“I love arguing, it’s like a Sport I could take up”) There’s a reason they’re called millennials - because they’re everything we’ve ever been and should have been and could have been and want to be. Thandiwe Newton Instagram - When I was 12 I danced professionally with the #RoyalFestivalBallet for the Christmas production of The Nutcracker in London (2 weeks, 2 shows a day, and I earned £30 🙄 ha ha ha!) I was the first black kid ever to perform with the company. And perhaps any other British dance company? But there was no fanfare. These silent victories that were never applauded, I realise I had many. I just kept going, never looking up. We live in a time when these victories for people of colour are sometimes recognised, and occasionally celebrated.
