While families live in cars and renters skip meals to make ends meet, in Melbourne alone there were enough homes vacant to give everyone on the Victorian public housing waiting list a home (twice over!) or massively boost the number of homes available to rent in Melbourne by 20%.
@mchandlermather is right – this is a deeply broken housing system that makes it profitable for investors to let homes sit empty subsidised by massive tax handouts, while screwing over renters and first home buyers.
