Unprecedented times. Over the past 14 years I’ve experienced, first hand, the slow disintegration of the working class, blue collar acting career. It started with agents and managers having to make terribly uncomfortable phone calls to their clients to tell them “you got the job!… but sorry they’ll only pay ____. If you don’t take it, someone else will.” Then one day you find out that your salary included future /advanced residual payments essentially erasing your opportunity to get by when the work is dry. “Non-negotiable!”…they said. Then you find out years later that the streaming networks pay you almost nothing in residuals at all because of the current deal in place! Your hard work being seen all over the world for the occasional $.19 Check in the mail. And now AI threatens to eliminate thousands upon thousands of jobs to help the corporate giants make those 4th quarter gains and please the shareholders. They’ve chipped and chipped away at us year after year as we just took it and hoped our unions would one day fight for us. Many of us, like myself, spent ungodly amounts of money to train at our craft at a college/ university only to carry that debt for decades. Some actors you are watching right now still haven’t been able to afford to pay it off let alone just get by. The gauntlet we all go through to even get an opportunity to work in this business is more terrifying than most of you could stomach. Those that make it have climbed the steepest of mountains. We deserve to be paid fairly and protected so we can continue to deliver our best work for you all and follow our crazy dreams with some stability and a modicum of comfort in an otherwise unstable, erratic, uncertain profession. For Longevity. For Quality. The highest form of self love. Healthy outside ~> in. Dedication and Consistency. It spreads and codifies. I spent most of my life believing that I couldn’t. That I didn’t have the stuff. I’m here to tell you that you do have it. You do. Even you. We get one crack at this. Start today. Don’t ever stop. Don’t look back. Keep showing up. Don’t give up even when you drop the ball. Especially when you drop the ball. Give yourself the best chance to enjoy this experience as long as earthly possible. It’s worth it.
