Alfred Hitchcock Instagram – In June 1941, still unsure of the best ending for Suspicion, Alfred Hitchcock screened the film to a test audience. The ending shows Joan Fontaine drinking a glass of milk she believed to be poisoned, only to discover Cary Grant is instead intending to commit suicide by poisoning himself. This ending was rejected by viewers.
Hitchcock later told the New York Herald Tribune, that the audience “booed [the ending], and I don’t blame them.” In desperation, Hitchcock and Joan Harrison eventually came up with a new ending, which is the one used in the released film.
