Andrea Bocelli Instagram – Acrobats poised on a tightrope between hope and despair, we grasp onto the handhold of a special day. A day that has been bringing us the Good News for two thousand years, bolstering us in the certainty that goodwill, sooner or later – but always – will prevail.

As Holy Christmas returns, I pray that an awareness of the wonderful complexity of life may find its place within us. A complexity that does not confuse our clear, coherent vision of our earthly path, but guides us.

Nothing is simpler (or stupider) than war. Every conflict requires a forced duality between good guys and bad guys, between allied (and complicit) friends to be protected and saved, and adversary enemies to be dehumanized, to be hated endlessly, to be eliminated.

I hope that Christmas will incite us to reflect on complexity. Each person harbors a single soul formed of the thoughts and feelings that make up our consciousness; each body is a teeming miracle of more than thirty trillion cells. Likewise, the world is always infinitely larger and more complex than we can know, perceive and understand.

The world is not made of friends and enemies, but of brothers and sisters. Let us respect and love them, embracing diversity and complexity. Then everything will be simpler, just like those few wonderful moral principles that He who was born today gave to support his children.
