Sometimes, it means someone who has been betrayed leaves and never looks back to stay healthy. Marriage can become an idol, which is dangerous. People who make the hard choice to walk away from a toxic marriage may feel like failures, but that’s simply not true.
Laura is a hero to me, not because she stayed with me, but because she prioritized her health and relationship with God. I’m grateful that included me and our marriage! But for us, the goal is not just a shiny marriage—it’s healthy lives. A healthy marriage is a byproduct of that. I love and support marriage; it’s a great and godly thing. But Jesus didn’t die for marriage. He died for people. Our culture sometimes prioritizes preserving marriage over the individuals in it, which is wrong.
I will celebrate my marriage with no apologies and never take a sunset photo for granted. If you’ve been through betrayal and heartbreak and your story didn’t include a sunset picture, you are not “less than.” There will be more sunsets in your future, with someone safe and healthy. Nothing should rob you of your joy or your relationship with God. If anyone shamed you for doing what’s right to save your soul, remember: their opinion doesn’t matter, but you do. All our roads are broken, yet they can still lead to beauty.
