11 years ago this morning, 20 sets of parents kissed their first graders goodbye as they dropped them off for school. It was the last time they would see their children alive. I beg you – commit yourself to the cause of creating a nation where this never ever happens again.
In 2022, Congress passed the first significant gun safety legislation in 30 years. In 2023, murders (about 3/4 of which are gun deaths) went down 13% – THE BIGGEST RECORDED DROP IN U.S. HISTORY. Not a coincidence.
You want to know how the economy is rigged against working people? Here’s Izzy’s story – I ran into him along my walk and he was nice enough to walk with me for a while this afternoon. Izzy worked full time for Walmart for 17 years. He never made enough to put any money away. He lived paycheck to paycheck. But he found honor in the work. He liked helping people. But when he got to retirement age, after working full time his whole life, he had virtually nothing saved. He gets $900 in social security income and a little help w food stamps. He shares a 3 bedroom with two strangers and his rent is $700 for a single room. He has $200 left over for everything else each month. For a guy who worked hard his whole life, it borders on dehumanizing. He doesn’t complain, but he gets choked up talking about how this wasn’t how his life was supposed to go. His wife died young, he moved to Connecticut to start over, and now he’s stuck, after doing what he thought was expected of him. That’s our economy today. All the rules are stacked against guys like Izzy. Wages are too low. Pensions have disappeared. Housing scarcity is a policy choice. Meanwhile trust fund kids live lives of luxury and many billionaires pay a lower tax rate than Izzy does.
Since Roe was overturned, 21 states have banned or restricted the abortion access that Roe protected. Shiri’s story is a powerful reminder of the consequences.
It’s National Run for Office Day! I was 24 years old when I first ran. My state legislator led the fight in Hartford to block passage of legislation to mandate insurance coverage of prescription birth control. So despite long odds, I decided to run for office. Alabama Republicans passed a law punishing companies that recognize unions. How is that pro-worker?
Republicans right now: We want small government. Except for when it comes to the life-saving medical treatment of a 31-year-old woman in Texas.
All these dudes want is to control women.

Reminder of where Trump’s priorities lie. More major tax cuts for major corporations, paid for by you and your family.
51 years ago, the Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade to protect abortion access for millions of Americans. In 2022, a far-right, politically motivated Supreme Court overturned that protection. Since then, 21 states have banned or restricted the abortion access that Roe protected. Now more than ever, we have to be committed to restoring and protecting access to this essential health care.
A rain soaked Day 1 of my annual Walk Across Connecticut comes to a close.
The absolute worst thing that can happen to abortion access in this country is a second Trump presidency. Anti-choice groups are drawing us a map of all of the ways they want Trump to abuse executive power to stop women from accessing abortion.
This morning on my walk I stopped into the amazing clothing bank run by Second Congregational Church in Coventry. Volunteers were hard at work sorting the kids clothes they give away to families in need. So inspiring!
Kicking off Day 2 of my annual Walk Across Connecticut. Shooting for about 16 miles today but I’ve started slow bc I’ve already stopped to talk to so many interesting people in the first mile! Topics so far today: drug prices, farm preservation, holistic medicine.
It’s 2024. Unions are good. Everyone knows this except for the Republicans running for President.
