Geoff Lawton Instagram – At @zaytunafarm, we have an abundance of wild winter stinging nettles, also known as Urtica dioica. These nettles, originally from Europe, can now be found on every continent except Antarctica. Despite their sting, they are safe to consume after proper preparation. Here’s how to prepare and eat them:

Cooking: Boiling or blanching nettles removes their stinging hairs. Boil them in water for a few minutes until they wilt.

Handling: Use gloves to handle them until they are cooked. After cooking, the sting will be gone and they can be safely handled.

Culinary Uses: Once cooked, stinging nettles can be used like spinach. They’re great in soups, stews, pasta dishes, or as a side vegetable. You can also brew them as a tea.

Nutritional Benefits: Stinging nettles are very high in minerals, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
