Jack Carr Instagram – Special Operations legend Arthur D. “Bull” Simons was born on this day in 1918. His service spanned World War II through Vietnam to include the Raid at Cabanatuan in the Philippines and the Son Tay Raid in North Vietnam. In 1979 he was hired by Ross Perot to plan and lead a mission to rescue two Electronic Data Systems employees arrested in the Iranian Revolution and imprisoned in Iran. That rescue mission is detailed in the book ON WINGS OF EAGLES by Ken Follett.

I was able to spend time with Mr. Perot on two occasions, talk about the mission in Iran and see artifacts from Son Tay. Some of those pictures are included in this post.

Colonel Simons’ legacy is honored with a statue at the JFK Special Warfare Museum facing the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On one side of its base are the words:
“HISTORY TEACHES THAT WHEN YOU BECOME INDIFFERENT AND LOSE THE WILL TO FIGHT SOMEONE WHO HAS THE WILL TO FIGHT WILL TAKE OVER.”
-COLONEL “BULL” SIMONS / SON TAY RAID / NOVEMBER 21, 1970.
On the other side are the words:
WHO WILL GO? “SEND ME.”
