This week, ocean champion Hawai’i Governor @govjoshgreen signed the Hawai’i Seabed Mining Prevention Act (SB 2575) into law, prohibiting “the mining, extraction, and removal of minerals from the seabed in all state marine waters” and preventing “the issuance of permits associated with seabed mining activities.”
This win was made possible by the hundreds of young people, the Kānaka ‘Ōiwi of Hawai’i, NGOs, political leaders, and more who demanded the protection of their Moana. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Hawai’i’s timely ban comes ahead of this month’s meetings at the @isba_hq (ISA) to continue negotiations on deep-sea mining regulations and the mining code—signaling to the ISA and the U.S. that deep-sea mining has no place in our sustainable future.
Now, it’s time for the U.S. to follow suit of its champion states.
