Do what you can, when you can, while you can.
#ThePlagueNerdalogues was born out of a deep love for the writing in genre, writing that often doesn’t get its due—but is the material that continues to captivate audiences today as it did when I was a kid. It was born out of a desire to help when I was feeling helpless and useless. It was born out of the COVID-19 lockdown and initially raised money for No Kid Hungry…but everything changes.
Last night we launched the second wave of the Plague Nerdalogues, this time to benefit Black Lives Matter. I live at the intersection of so many worlds — I’m Black, I’m a nerd, I’m a television writer, I’m a comics writer, I’m a gamer — and to be able to bring all those worlds together, at this time of crisis, felt urgent. Luckily, so many people felt that urgency as well, so when I sent up a flare it was like the fucking beacons of Gondor.
Friends opened up their contacts — colleagues like @dblackanese, @lamagee33, and @damonlindelof — and rallied the troops. Actors I’ve never met emailed me to ask if they could contribute. The talented folks who took part in the first wave unanimously offered support.
