Kirk Whalum Instagram – I’ve waited to post this because frankly so many folks have impressions & stories with the great @davidsanbornofficial that I wanted to read. Not the least of which came from my #avatar @therealmarcusmiller It was so meaningful.
But this pic captures a career-defining moment for me personally that I’ll never forget.
David once told me years ago that “sound is everything.” It impacted me deeply because my reference point was him and the great Arnett Cobb. And of course, our common influence, the awesome Hank Crawford from right here in Memphis.
There’s a lot more. But suffice to say that there will never be another David Sanborn. I’m grateful to have called him not just mentor, but friend. I wrote this song WALTZ FOR DAVID in his honor. 🙏🏾
