Nina West Instagram – Happy Pride 💖
As we find ourselves in the final weekend of Pride Month and celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which happened in Greenwich Village in NYC, I wanted to share this clip.
At the beginning of the month, I was asked to honor Howard Ashman at @stonewallnps with his song “Sheridan Square” – a song he cowrote with @alanmenken ♥️
Written while the AIDS epidemic was raging and claiming the lives of thousands of queer people, Howard put to words the stories of friends struggling with the deafening silence that fell over the heart of a community because of the extreme loss of life due to the AIDS virus.
And as so many of us will celebrate Pride this weekend in New York and around the country, I wanted to take a moment to remember an entire generation of brilliant, beautiful souls lost to AIDS. I wanted to take a moment to lift up and celebrate those who held people dying from AIDS and gave them humanity when much of the world turn their backs on them and our LGBTQIA community – specifically offering gratitude to the lesbians in our community who took care of so many gay men dying.
Sheridan Square and Christopher Street represent so much of what our movement comes from and where it should go. Very grateful to have the chance to celebrate the memory and legacy of Howard Ashman and remember the lives of those lost in our community in this location, as many mark and celebrate here all throughout the year.
