Uncle Lou, Mr. Gossett, Louis Gossett Jr; you taught me more during a couple car rides and a breakfast than I could’ve learned in years of school.
I won’t ever forget the feeling of picking up the phone to you PERSONALLY returning a message I’d left with your people, when I was just an ambitious kid with a lofty idea of getting you to work on a film I was producing called ‘Boiling Pot.’ And I can’t ever forget how excited I was that you actually said yes!
I was beyond excited to be the one to pick you up from your house in Malibu and drive an hour and a half to Irvine for our table read.
Hearing your stories about your family trips to the Bahamas, quitting the NBA because acting paid better (crazy to think about!) and which projects of yours were your favorites was so much fun!
And you told me that one day I would be the one walking the red carpets with all the flashing lights. That moment has given me so much confidence to carry on, because who’s gonna argue with an Oscar Winner?
I only regret that I let so much time pass without seeing you again. And that this blurry picture from your birthday party is the only one I have of us.
But nobody can take away the time I was so incredibly lucky to spend with you. Thank you for being a trailblazer so that I may stand where I do today. Thank you for being so generous with your time, your talent and your wisdom.
