The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 is long forgotten, despite its huge impact on the subsequent shape and development of the city.
One month from today, we’re hosting a special evening running tour (NO PRIOR READING REQUIRED!) in partnership with @chicagoraceriot and @lookingglasstheatre to use movement and stories to learn more about the devastating and lasting impact the events had on the city—and how we can keep moving forward.
Inspired by Claire Hartfield’s book A Few Red Drops (appropriate for all ages), this easy-paced (~11:00 min/mile), 5-mile loop in Bronzeville features speakers TikTok Historian Sherman Dilla (@6figga_dilla), author Arionne Nettles (@arionnenettles), CRR19 director Peter Cole (@pedro_the_ghost_pepper), and Dan Duster, great grandson of Ida B. Wells.
At the end of our route, runners will have the option to watch the free Lookingglass Theater (@lookingglasstheatre) performance of Sunset1919 (@sunset1919chicago), an artistic ritual featuring music, movement, art and word, commemorating the start of the 1919 Chicago Race Riot.

– All modes of transport (cycling, roller blading, wheelchair, etc.) welcome. Please take care of your own safety and ensure you can maintain the pace on your mode of transport.
– We run rain or shine, but will postpone in case conditions become unsafe to run.
– This event is kid- and teen-friendly, so long as you can maintain the pace with a stroller or on foot.
