Reason requires a high degree of discipline, of concentration; impression is easier… The emotions are more easily roused, closer to the surface, more malleable.” Unfortunately, we’re seeing some of that play out right now. People are absorbing opinions from TikTok and from podcasts, as opposed to vetted information from journalism and books. And we wonder why we’re such a fractured republic. It’s an election year. Do yourself a favor and turn off the internet, pick up a book, and read it: This terrific examination of the warring durabilties and fragilities of our system by Heather Cox Richardson is a great reminder of the importance of staying engaged in the preservation of democracy while there’s still time. The book is an easily digestible read, and a great way to learn the history of what it is we’re trying to protect.
