Stephen Colbert Instagram – Benny & Stephen Colbert, Boykin Spaniel, The Ed Sullivan Theater – @colbertlateshow, New York, NY • It’s National Take Your Dog to Work Day, and in honor of the day I spent some time with Benny the Boykin and his dad Stephen Colbert! I went down to the Ed Sullivan Theater in midtown, met them both, and joined them at work. As it turns out, Benny was a big fan of my signature weird dog noises, and he’s as much of a star on camera as Stephen. Seeing them together made me appreciate Stephen not just as a comedic genius, but also as a fellow dog dad.

“Down in South Carolina, he’s the state dog. He comes to work with me every day – he likes me whether or not I’m funny. He wants to be loved on his own terms. I didn’t grow up with dogs; I’m one of eleven children, and my mom said she had enough dogs. My writing partner for 17 years is Paul Dinello – he’s an amazing dog person, and his dog Cagney was like our third writing partner. The Colbert Report was also a dog-friendly building. Having dogs has made me walk more than I used to. A walk was just something to get someplace, but now every walk is an adventure. He is such a tourist.
