Stephen Voyce Instagram – Taking a moment away from promoting my new album to bring up this issue that affects all Indie Artists, one way or another.
To all Indie Artists,
I’m sure many of you by now are aware, or have been affected, by Spotify pushing Distributors to penalize artists for what their algorithm perceives as fraudulent streams, which sometimes results in their music being taken down, not just from Spotify but all Digital Service Providers. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of this bullying behavior, one that punishes artists when the real issue is the malicious bots and AI playlists that have become an epidemic on the platform. Very regularly, I log into my Spotify for Artists to monitor the playlists my music gets added to, and whenever they seem fishy I report them via Spotify’s support, letting them know which songs were added. And what happens at the end of the reporting period I still get flagged… where is the sense in any of this?
So Dear Indie Artists Community, here are questions I urge you to start asking Spotify via Spotify for Artists:
1. Why don’t Artists have the ability to manually remove themselves from Playlists?
2. Why aren’t you transparent with what the source of the so-called fraudulent streams are? How can we as artists protect ourselves if you leave us defenseless but then want us penalized for actions often out of our control?
3. Why don’t you arm artists with early detection tools via Spotify for Artists that alert us when so-called fraudulent streams are becoming present in our songs?
4. What actions are you taking to shut down bots and AI playlists on your platform?
5. How is your algorithm even defining fraudulent streams?
6. Now this isn’t an ideal scenario but if Spotify is so concerned about bots and AI playlists then why do you still have the option to allow users to listen to music on Spotify for free? Why not just have everyone paying a subscription fee? Is it possibly because you don’t want to lose out on ad revenue?
We need to stand together as independent artists, to protect our music. So tag an indie artist in this, let’s amplify our voices. 🇨🇦🇳🇬🇩🇪👽. đź“· @adhdtravels
