Only 25 more days left of my solo exhibition “Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People – Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego” at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. @asianartmuseum
On February 8, they will be holding the third and final campaign to gift the highly popular Collectible Trading Card with the admissions ticket. (Completed sets of these are being traded at high prices on the Japanese resale site Mercari.)
The painting shown in this post is titled “Judgement Day”. In my conversations with the curator Laura Allen, she asked me to create a large iconic work suitable for the exhibition’s theme, monsters. I am quite proud of this resulting work, which I created by mixing the monstrosity of human beings I felt through the pandemic with the strange imageries of Ukiyoe from the Edo period (1603 – 1868).
Ukiyoe was a theme that I had always avoided in the past, so I am very grateful that Laura’s guidance allowed me to create a work addressing it for the first time.
