Theaster Gates Instagram – The clay body and basic slip of my sculpture is often made from the same material as my black brick. The moments of sculpture that excite me most happen when I’m thinking about larger projects, like St. Laurence, and something hits me, as if the work of St. Laurence or the collections are a way to get to new ideas. Now that the structural work is happening and 2 floors are with drywall, the building feels whole in new ways. These days my journal no longer distinguishes drawings for furniture, building plans, poetry, new sculptural work or paintings. Page after page, I’m trying to solve problems as clearly as I can. It makes me want to build sculptures as buildings and roofs, walls and floors as art. I’m a total mess but I have more confidence that the pipe configuration for radiant heat and the plumber who sets it up, offers sculpture something very special and when I pause to look at my the copper, cast iron, plastic tubes and fittings, I see a sculptural world so generative, it makes me want to leave sculpture altogether and join the plumbers union. | Posted on 01/May/2024 04:40:02
