A big thank you to spring 2024 Distinguished Visitor and artist Theaster Gates for an engaging talk on his artworks and exhibitions, influences and hardships, and the breadth of his artistic practice. In discussion with Josef Helfenstein, former director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Gates also touched on broader societal themes, observing, “The entire world has a radicalized right,” which he imagines as “a strong and barking dog.” How did we get here? Gates: “When you reduce culture, the inevitability that we will hear and feel the dog barking louder is probably true.”
