Lots of talk these days about finding your “why”, what’s your “why”, live your purpose. My pastor @pastorrickwarren wrote an extremely popular book, The Purpose Driven Life. I’ve read it twice. I love a purpose moment.
In recovery we say our primary purpose is to stay sober and help another alcoholic achieve sobriety.
Why am I sober? Why did I get sober? Why is sobriety my why? Because for me, to drink or use drugs is to die. It just is. I have been down the darkest road with this disease and this is just facts. How many friends of ours or people we read about in the news lately have died from alcoholism or a drug overdose? This isn’t a joke, addiction. This is life or death and none of us are immune to it.
So WHY do I wake up at 4:30am to pray and meditate before I scroll socials or the news? Because I have to center myself in a Higher Power #god before I can be useful to anyone else.
WHY do I make myself available to be of service to others? Because it is a GIFT to be able to use my experience to help others so that my past is not wasted. It is a blessing to have the trust and respect of others.
One rule of life seeks to respond to two questions: Who do I want to be? How do I want to live? … or the interplay between these two questions: How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?
WHY do I talk about this publicly? Because I cannot imagine not offering this channel of Hope to those who might need to hear it today.
Your “why” is whatever keeps you going. Don’t ever stop.
So my question to you is:
What is your WHY?
