We got into many of the nuances of their roles and auditions and the meaning of the series for them, and how much fun they had during the whole process, and what limits still exist for Vietnamese and Asian actors and stories.
My takeaway—it was a miracle we ever got this show made. It’s entertaining but also political, flashy but also demanding, celebrity-studded but also indie, historical but also contemporary, American but also Vietnamese, Vietnamese but also American, cinematic but also literary, capitalist but also communist, and on and on with its contradictions.
