Luna Lauren Velez Instagram – I remember going to the movies when FAME came out. I was an afroLatina living in the Rockaways. Going to the movies was always my refuge. So when I saw Irene Cara for the first time, I recognized her immediately. She was someone who looked like me and my family and was in the arts. It was EVERYTHING to me. More than I knew then, she really helped shape me as an actor, singer and dancer. When my twin sis Lori played the role of CARMEN/COCO in the West End production of FAME in London, my family went to see her. We couldn’t be prouder. We grew up with FAME and Irene Cara represented us. She was, as us old school people say, a triple threat.
