Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom Instagram – ‘Edinburgh made a great impression upon us; it is quite beautiful & totally unlike anything I have seen’.
This line from Queen Victoria’s journal followed her first visit to Scotland with Prince Albert in September 1842. Her experience would cement the Royal Family’s enduring affection for the country and its capital. From 1850, the family has used the Palace of Holyroodhouse as their official Scottish residence, spending time there celebrating the capital’s people and culture.
As Edinburgh celebrates its 900th anniversary, we look back at Royal visits and events in this extraordinary city.
