Putin’s failure as a leader drives his resentment of Ukraine democracy
–
As a dictator, Vladimir Putin is not obliged to care about his own people’s unhappiness. What are they going to do, vote him out?
And yet…
There is still, even now, unbelievably, a lot of lazy punditry, a lot of lazy assuming out there in the press that our two major parties in this country are basically the same, that they are mirror images of each other. The actual news from the actual world is here to disprove that most days.
One of these things is not at all like the other.
Maddow: “It is a hallmark of this time in Republican politics that anybody who has stood up in some capacity, that has put them at odds with Donald Trump, anyone, soon finds themselves targeted and threatened by the Trump movement.” … “Part of rejecting violence and intimidation as part of our political system is protecting the individual people who are being subject to it. And that is not happening yet in our country, which is a problem.”

But since we covered developments literally every day last week it’s worth noting where we are so far.
So this clip is an edited mix of coverage from the January 12 and January 13, 2022 episodes of the Rachel Maddow Show.
Vladimir Putin has made this case that at least one reason for his war on Ukraine is that he couldn’t stand the feeling of having any NATO countries right up against Russia’s borders.

Republicans worry unruly passenger no-fly list casts anti-maskers as terrorists
–
There’s not a lot of narrative to this story, but the reaction from viewers has been so strong we’re sharing it here.
Beyond the main issue of what to do about the surge in violent passengers on planes, it’s also interesting to consider president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, Sara Nelson’s argument that despite official FAA statistics showing that most violent passenger incidents in the past year have been about masks, it’s not *really* about masks.
