Like most of the songs in HeeraMandi, Lajjo’s final mujra is like a short film, in that it takes the story ahead.
The set was ready, the shoot of the song was pulled up, and it happened to be a mere two weeks before my wedding! Naturally, I was petrified, and I always joke that the heavy, albeit beautiful costume, prepped me for my shaadi in the best way. Like any actor, I wished I had more time on my hands to polish my Kathak. Because this one was going to be challenging… not only was Lajjo delusional and heartbroken, but she was also drunk. Showing up as a bride to entice her lover one last time… for me, she was always moth to flame.
Desperate to be loved, desperate to have his last name and self – destructive when it doesn’t work out. It has always been a dream to work with the master @sudeepchatterjee.isc… May all actors have the privilege of occupying his frame once in their lives!!! love you, dada.

Here… the last scene of Masaan, which completes 9 years today. So much of it for my character was about silences. About the ghost of grief stuck on Devi’s shoulders, like betaal, accompanying her everywhere, leaving her listless, hopeless, angry but quiet. Feels like yesterday we made this beautiful film. Will forever be thankful to Neeraj and Varun for writer this woman. This film gave the industry Vicky Kaushal and India the cinema of Neeraj Ghaywan, (can’t wait for more of him honestly). This was the toughest character I have ever gotten the opportunity to play, because she suffers in silence, something that’s against the grain of who I am. As I wistfully reminisce about the experience of making this wonderful piece of cinema, I bemoan the tragedy of an industry where more Masaan’s are not possible with ease… why not ? These films stand the test of time, earn laurels for the country globally and really are just pure art. Why can’t we have more of that ! God knows we need it !
