Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram – I improvise a lot! Im not sure that most people understand how much I improvise… but it’s a good portion of any solo performance. But while improvisation happens there is a choreographic and compositional awareness that extends through the movement process. This awareness has been growing steadily for me over the years. And in my recent performances of ANUBHAVA I learned a lot about how to overcome my creative limits in the moment – on stage. For me, I need enough to populate my imagination… once that is done, the story will unfold easily. It’s very different from the usual method of training for abhinaya where the gesture is taught systematically. Although I use this for my students in the initial years, I eventually hope that they can all do what I do. Populate the imagination and let the story guide you, while compositional, narrative awareness keeps a check.
