Afua Hirsch Instagram - Some thoughts about international humanitarian law

The ENTIRE point of which is to prevent situations like the tragedy unfolding before our eyes in #Gaza at this very moment

Borne of the trauma of past genocides

Of which many of us are the survivors and descendants

It all counts for nothing if it doesn’t count for this

Afua Hirsch Instagram - The man in the center of this photograph is my grandfather Hans Hirsch

He survived a childhood lived under Nazi rule as a Jew in Berlin, fleeing in 1938. I never stopped (probably annoyingly) asking him about those experiences. I loved him and miss him deeply.

At times like this, when people try to confuse us as to right and wrong, who is oppressed and who is an oppressor, I think about him. He survived one of the most extreme periods of hatred and oppression in history. I ask myself what he would think

When I dig deep, I know that one of the reasons I am on this lifelong journey of struggle against unfair systems of power, is his legacy. I know that he stood for a world where the psychosis of genocide could not be repeated. This literally informs everything I do.

If you are passionate about fighting antisemitism, as I am, you cannot ignore prejudice and dehumanisation in any of its forms. You cannot be silent when it is weaponised against black people of African heritage. You cannot be complicit in Islamophobia. You cannot tolerate the murder of innocent civilians. You cannot watch Palestine be flattened in the name of security. This mission transcends any one community’s interests, that is the meaning of solidarity.

My grandfather’s trauma reminds me that a world in which we are comfortable with killing people in the name of order, security, prosperity, revenge, or any of the other reasons that are inevitably given, is a world in which none of us can ever be safe

I know there are Jewish people who have been told those of us who stand against the murder of Palestinians are driven by hatred for them. I hear that fear. I know it’s borne out of trauma. I urge you to engage with the Jewish organisations who are fighting alongside Palestinian brothers and sisters for peace, who are doing such powerful work to dismantle that narrative.

I salute them, and every single person who has had the courage to separate themselves from pressure within their own community to take a stand for peace. And for justice. It’s hard. History will judge us. If we stay silent against what is happening in Gaza, we - humanity - we all lose.

Afua Hirsch Instagram - It’s difficult to find language that adequately conveys how comfortable our political leaders have become with overt racism, outright lies, and rhetoric that costs lives

Just when you thought we had hit rock bottom with Sajid Javid, we got Priti Patel. When she seemed an unparalleled disaster, we got Suella Braverman.

There may be no accountability but we will not forget

Afua Hirsch Instagram - Much of our political and media establishment created the racist, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim sentiment that’s now out of control violence in the UK

and did so over years and decades to the point where it was embraced by the mainstream and normalised

I’m not interested in anything that’s not a critique of that

Afua Hirsch Instagram - “I feel like I need to man up. And not in the toxic way that people tell young boys to ‘man up’, because I feel like, let the youths cry. Let the youts feel, innit….

For me, it’s what a good dad would do for his son.”

Spent a day with Big Mike. We talked about manhood, body image, purpose and love, baked a cake together, and I wrote about it for @edward_enninful @britishvogue

Afua Hirsch Instagram - I never, ever imagined writing this.

When we met in Ghana, people refused to accept we were not the same person.

They just could not tell us apart. You from Guyana and me Ghanaian British, looking actually pretty different in my opinion! None of it mattered, we were one.

And we were one. We travelled the world together - look at us here, the Alps, all the way to Germany for Renaissance, NYC, London, Norfolk… we missed flights together - never exchanging even a single angry word.

We raised our girls together, cried, laughed, literally climbed actual mountains together.

When you uncovered your illness, I was convinced we would solve it, like every other problem that came our way. I hoped jollof rice and kpapashitor salmon might help cure you. For a minute, it seemed to work: food, friendship, medicine, rest, love… you were so loved by so many, we all surrounded you, and we could laugh, and hope.

You are gone now, and I have to make sense of a world without you. Your beauty, your light, your kindness, your vision for a better future. Not just for us. Not just for our girls. For every black girl - this was the work to which you devoted your life.

I love you. I admire you. I miss you. I grieve for you. I laugh for you. I will never stop thinking of you.

Afua Hirsch Instagram - Deeply ironic to me that so many universities’ responses to these student protests seem profoundly uneducated

Educate yourself by reading. One book I recommend
Student resistance: a history of the unruly subject
By Mark Edelman Boren

My takeaways:

1. As long as there have been students; there have been student protests

2. Our media’s obsession with centres of formal political power makes it ill-equipped to understand or analyse protests like this, hence the allegation they are anarchic displays of pointless disruption. They are anything but

3. The decision to meet peaceful protest with violence - eg inviting riot police onto campus - tends to be what rallies wider public opinion in favour of the protesters. So self defeating even by its own standards

4. There is no justification for educational institutions not being transparent about their financial dealings. And divestment works

Afua Hirsch Instagram - Some things do cheer me up in this crazy world

@sinnersmovie is the only film I have EVER been to see twice in a cinema. I watched it first on a normal screen, and found it to be exquisite, unforgettable and so, so true

then when I read about how Ryan Coogler combined the IMAX and UltraPanavision in a way I don’t think has ever been done before, I decided the only way to pay proper respect to this work of genius was to go back and watch it in IMAX

And then I was asked to host Ryan, @michaelbjordan and @_milescaton_ in conversation @britishfilminstitute and that was probably the easiest yes of the year ☺️

My only regret is that the incomparable @wunmimosaku was not there. I will never tire of her brilliance in life in general and in this film on particular

Black creativity, integrity, and solidarity fills me up and heals my wounds. What a privilege 💫

My only regret is that the incomparable @wunmimosaku was not there. I will never tire of her brilliance in life in general and in this film on particular

Black creativity, integrity, and solidarity fills me up and heals my wounds. What a privilege 💫

Afua Hirsch Instagram - Some things do cheer me up in this crazy world

@sinnersmovie is the only film I have EVER been to see twice in a cinema. I watched it first on a normal screen, and found it to be exquisite, unforgettable and so, so true

Afua Hirsch Instagram - France’s President Macron to former French colonies in Africa as they have the audacity to seek liberation

“I think someone forgot to say thank you”

Um, maybe it’s France who forgot to say thank you

The role African soldiers played in fighting for France in WW2, suffering under Nazi occupation, and sacrificing their lives for the Resistance, is only the tip of the iceberg

As Jacques Chiraq said in 2007:
“Without Africa, France will slide down into the rank of a third world power”

If you haven’t seen the essential movie Camp de Thiaroye, by the legendary Senegalese director Ousmane Sembène, this is your reminder to make it right

Clips from my documentary series Africa Rising
Senegal, 2019
Sembène died in 2007 but I got to talk to his assistant director Clarence Thomas Delgado

Afua Hirsch Instagram - “Israel’s annihilation of Gaza, provisioned by Western democracies… sought from the very beginning ‘to make the entire Gaza Strip uninhabitable, and to debilitate its population to such a degree that it would either die out or seek all possible options to flee the territory’”

“I write out of that guilt – a broad human condition after Israel’s livestreamed mass-murder spree in the Middle East– and the obligation that the living have to the innocent dead

I also write with the faith that there is such a thing as solidarity between human beings as human beings”

Mishra’s solidarity has already cost him – he describes how the lecture that would turn into this book cost him a high profile event at the Barbican, was cancelled once they realised what he was going to say, and his column at Bloomberg.

I can see why people don’t want you to engage with this. You won’t be the same after. It’s *the* most essential thing you can read right now

“The World After Gaza: A History”, by Pankaj Mishra

Afua Hirsch Instagram - Now that there is a ceasefire in this war, the other war will intensify – the one for control of the narrative

Over the last few weeks we have seen the attempt to maninuplate the telling of this story in so many ways

The dehumanisation of Palestinians – in language which brings to mind Fanon:

“the terms the settler uses when he mentions the native are zoological terms. He speaks of the yellow man’s reptilian motions, of the stink of the native quarter, of breeding swarms, of foulness, of spawn, of gesticulations… Those hordes of vital statistics, those hysterical masses, those faces bereft of all humanity, those distended bodies which are like nothing on earth”

The killing of journalists. This alone.

The prevention of reporters from entering Gaza, making it impossible for reporters to offer the same humanity and pathos they rightly gave Israeli victims of Hamas. Nonprofit Reporters Without Borders has accused Israel of "suffocating journalism in Gaza". We have relied on so many heartbreaking and brave citizen journalists, whose work has made it impossible to turn away

High profile entertainment figures cancelled or dropped, including Melissa Barrera, Susan Sarandon, and Maha Dakhil

The censorship of statements of solidarity with Palestine, from high profile entertainment platforms

A small line in a @politico story is one of the most important things I have read:

The Biden administration is “concerned” that an “unitended consequence” of the ceasefire will be allowing journalists to report on what’s *actually* happened in Gaza.
In the knowledge that this could jeopardise what public support remains for the devastation it has wrought

The tragedies of the last weeks have brought out the humanity in so many observers and consumers of news, transcending immense pressure and the risk of censure to seek the truth. Time to pay attention more than ever

The ENTIRE point of which is to prevent situations like the tragedy unfolding before our eyes in #Gaza at this very moment

Borne of the trauma of past genocides

Of which many of us are the survivors and descendants

It all counts for nothing if it doesn’t count for this

Afua Hirsch - 8.9K Likes - The man in the center of this photograph is my grandfather Hans Hirsch

Just when you thought we had hit rock bottom with Sajid Javid, we got Priti Patel. When she seemed an unparalleled disaster, we got Suella Braverman.

There may be no accountability but we will not forget

Spent a day with Big Mike. We talked about manhood, body image, purpose and love, baked a cake together, and I wrote about it for @edward_enninful @britishvogue

Rest in power Feyi ✨

We travelled the world together – look at us here, the Alps, all the way to Germany for Renaissance, NYC, London, Norfolk… we missed flights together – never exchanging even a single angry word. For every black girl – this was the work to which you devoted your life. I love you. I admire you. I miss you. I grieve for you. I laugh for you. I will never stop thinking of you. Afua Hirsch - 4.6K Likes - Deeply ironic to me that so many universities’ responses to these student protests seem profoundly uneducated

Afua Hirsch - 3.3K Likes - Some things do cheer me up in this crazy world

Afua Hirsch - 2K Likes - France’s President Macron to former French colonies in Africa as they have the audacity to seek liberation

Afua Hirsch - 1.8K Likes - Now that there is a ceasefire in this war, the other war will intensify – the one for control of the narrative
