Caption : Today, I marched with 14-year-old Ben, who lost his friend Rosa to the devastating floods in Belgium this summer. I marched with Mitzi, who in the Philippines has had to to experience the destructive force of climate change her whole life. I marched with Thomas, who has to explain to his two-year-old daughter why our beautiful planet as we know it now, may only exist in history books by the time she grows up. These are just a few of the millions of stories. Everyone who showed up today has a story. Everyones future on the line, if we don’t act now. I am now looking at our leaders. By now, you have heard our stories. It’s about time you realize, you are also a part of this story. We need real, conscious climate leadership – and we need it now. There is no time to waste. Caption : Being non-binary is a privilege. Since I could not follow the examples I had, I had to invent myself by making my own rules. Instead of questioning myself, I questioned society’s blueprint and found out there’s millions of people around the world that also had to design their own – unconventional – blueprint. The queer movement is a movement for equal rights and for liberation. And let me tell you something you might have not thought about before: queer liberation is also a fight for the liberation of straight and cisgender people. It’s a dream about freeing people from their fear of otherness and prejudices. It’s giving everybody a chance to break loose from the preconceptions that there is only one right way to lead your life. Being queer means being able to investigate societal structures and question them. It’s about being able to let go of the old blueprints and unwritten laws that define who we are and how we should live. The journey to freedom begins with your own liberation and ends with systemic change. Happy #nonbinaryweek 🏳️🌈 Photo by: @kellybalchLikes : 3836

Caption : To everyone out there, especially my activist friends, take a beat this summer and find moments to breathe. Shit can get overwhelming, and my mental health has definitely been feeling the ongoing pressure of work and the rat race we’re stuck in. So take a moment to enjoy the planet we’re trying to save. It’s called, sustainability 🤍 Photo by: @kellybalchLikes : 3168

Caption : A new chapter of activism has begun. Many said that COP26 was one of humanity’s last chances to turn the tide sufficiently in order to stay under 1.5C. It took me a day, after COP, to reflect and feel the grief of everything that has happened and the decisions made over the past two weeks. I feel much more disappointed and exhausted than I normally do. Although some of the negotiators pretend the two last weeks were a success, most even admit it was a failure. Coal will not be phased out. Gas and oil wasn’t even on the table. Current targets will increase emissions instead of reduce them. They’ll lead to a world uninhabitable for millions of people. This is an insult towards the world. And an insult towards people. Finally there’s no words anymore to hide the inaction that is taking place. Its more than clear that our so called ‘world leaders’ decided to take a path that’ll leave millions of people behind and will endanger humanity. And as a quick reminder, these are the people many of us VOTE for. We will need to change all of it. And we can. This is not the moment to give up hope. This is the moment to not settle for anything else than the truth anymore. It’ll take time for me to figure out and completely feel what this means for me as an activist and in what way I see the future of my activism. But if there’s one thing I know it’s that we need to double, triple, the amount of pressure. And I’ll be a part of that pressure.Likes : 3025

Caption : I’ve been really scared the past few weeks. Everything that’s been happening this summer going from droughts to extreme floods to heat domes and crop failures has been absolutely terrifying and another reminder that the climate crisis is happening right here and right now. Normally when I’m overwhelmed or scared I take long mountain hikes and try to gain perspective. But the only thing I can see now is a world in crisis. That’s not going to change unless we change it. We will be back on the streets on the 10th of October with all Belgian climate movements and we urge you to join us. We don’t have any more time to waste and policy makers need to be held accountable. Activism is our only way to fight this reality. I truly hope to see you there! #fridaysforfutute #youthforclimateLikes : 2937

Caption : This is the climate crisis in action. Currently, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany are being hit by extremely heavy rainfall and floods. Entire villages are being destroyed. Hundreds of people are being evacuated by emergency services. All IPCC reports have for a long time been predicted that global warming is projected to lead to a higher intensity of rainfall throughout Europe. Extreme weather will occur more and more frequently. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those who have lost their homes due to the extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and heatwaves this summer. A lot of gratitude to those who are working in the rescue operations. @youth.for.climate Foto : Bruno FahyLikes : 2897

Caption : For far too long I have pushed away my femininity and the woman inside me. Because I’m non-binary, patriarchy made me believe I could not be both, and I had to push away all the ‘woman’ I was, to become the man I wanted to be. I’ve loved all the beautiful, powerful and vulnerable things in the woman next to me, but hated it about myself. And now, I want to apologize to myself. For believing this restrictive version of what femininity looks like. It is my biggest ally, my greatest force and a crucial part of ‘me’ that I’ve finally learned to love. I see that now. My womanhood is only, and solely, defined by me and what I want it to be. And so today on #womansday I want to remind you of the infinity womanhood holds. 📸 @damondebacker for @dezondagmagazine #internationalwomansday #BreakTheBiasLikes : 2722

Caption : In a new survey of Eurobarometer, Climate change is seen as the single most serious problem that the world is facing today. The majority of people in the survey mentioned they are doing something themselves to tackle climate change, like reducing waste, going vegan, flying less,… but still the big majority of people holds big businesses and governments around the world accountable to fight the climate crisis on big scale. Most people even mentioned that they find the EU recovery package should largely fund green projects and the economy at large should be re-oriented towards being green. On top of that, 3 quarters of the questioned EU citizens say their national government is not doing enough to tackle climate change. Dear policymakers, this is directly pointed at you! Caption : What is newsworthy? We constantly see the media and politicians trying to minimize the climate crisis. Meanwhile, millions of people around the world are already suffering from its consequences. A report published this week by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre is a plea to world leaders to act in the face of an imminent and unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The study shows that since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, climate-related disasters have affected over 139 million people worldwide. 658 million have been exposed to extreme temperatures. The numbers are terrifying. Our leaders’ ignorance and inability to act is purely rooted in privilege. It’s time for them to wake up. This is why, in three weeks, we will be back on the streets of Brussels to strike and to demand climate justice for all. Will you be there? 👇🏼 📆 10/10/2021 ⏰ 13:00 📌 Brussels, Belgium @youthforclimate #BackToTheClimate #COP26 @IFRC @croixrougebe 📸 @kellybalchLikes : 2422

Caption : I will not be attending COP27 in Egypt this month. #COP27 will be held in a dictatorship that is systematically suppressing activists. This conference is becoming a smokescreen with the purpose of hiding the real human rights crisis in Egypt, concealing the violations and killings of thousands of activists who have been standing up for their human and environmental rights over the past years. It has also become clear that Egypt has no real ambition to push the climate negotiations forward. Protests are criminalized and scientific reports are labeled as ‘fake news’. In the last few of weeks, a lot of petitions and demonstrations have risen up from the climate movement against the Egyptian government, because our fight against the climate crisis is the same fight for human rights. I call on all climate activists and government delegates to unite under one key message at COP27: unless political freedoms and the rights of civil society advocates are safeguarded, there can be no real climate justice. I am in a position in which I’m able to decide not to physically partake in the conference. That is for me, from my specific place in society, at this time. I do think it is extremely important to continue putting pressure on both the Egyptian government and on world leaders. I will be supporting the activists who are attending the conference and putting pressure on the negotiations where I can, from Belgium. For that, we are putting final touches to our project with @unicefafrica – which will be showcased in various places (both live and virtual) at COP27. It will serve as an amplifier for the work done by youth on the front lines of the climate crisis in South Sudan and East Africa. The climate crisis is a human rights crisis, and we must urgently start addressing it as such. 📸 @joachim_blommeLikes : 2258

Caption : Today, we occupied the streets of Belgium in Ghent, Louvain-La-Neuve, Antwerp and Mens 📣🌎 – swipe to see the crowd! Why was today important? We are going toward a world of 3 to 4 degrees warming, which is a world no one can live in. This is not because we don’t have the solutions or knowledge to prevent it, but because we continue building a system that exploits people and planetary boundaries. Today’s policy-makers do not have things under control, although they want you to think they do. Currently our country, Belgium, doesn’t even have a federal agreement to put to on the table at COP26. We need to do more. Much, much more. This is why as @youth.for.climate will go to #COP26 to keep the pressure high, make sure people are informed and to hold our leaders accountable. Our participation is possible because of all of you who joined us on the streets today, and who have helped by spreading the word online. As the future generation, we are strong, loud and united. We will not give up, and will keep demanding a seat at the decision-making table. So get ready, because the next step is a big one: #COP26! 💪🏼🌎 #GlobalClimateStrikeLikes : 2193

Caption : No trust without honesty. In negotiations and debates with policy-makers, we as activists are always asked to ‘work together’ with our leaders. We are asked to trust them. We are told that we are fighting the same fight. Meanwhile, these same politicians are lying about the consequences of their own policies, and protecting big corporations that greenwash the truth behind their business, as if everything is fine. They are ignoring the simple fact that ‘business as usual’ will not sustain life on this planet. It’s impossible to act as one front against the climate crisis, if our leaders continue to ignore, minimize and deny the crisis we are faced with. In order for us to work together, we must trust each other. And honesty is a condition for that trust. We must keep the conversation going, we must keep the debate alive, but we must also strike, until our leaders have no other choice but to be honest with us and themselves. Caption : Life update 🧭🗺 It’s been quite overwhelming for me lately to keep up with social media. Both on a personal level, and a work level, I have been juggling complex and difficult things. I constantly find myself feeling like I’m running out of time. I’m sure some of you relate to that? A month ago, I started an internship for Climate Action Network Europe at their Brussels headquarters. Parallel to office hours, I work in my primary role of an activist and pursue my degree at university. Sometimes I feel like I’ve been running a sprint for the past three years, while actually this is a marathon. It’s made me realize I need to spend more time just being. Reading the books I want to read. Having the conversations I want to have. Fighting this crisis on different fronts with different people. I’m granting myself time to be fully present. Chasing sunsets, climbing mountains, sharing deep moments with my partner and the people I love, feeling the waves of the ocean. All while focusing on the big projects that need my full presence. Not a worn-out version of me, chasing a million different things. I hope you get to do that too. The change we want to see is about sustainability, but also about resilience, rest and care. I’ll see you less here in the coming weeks, but as always. my email inbox remains open for the revolution 👇🏼 [email protected] • Captured by @kellybalchLikes : 2076

Caption : Everyone has a first. I remember the first strike I ever went to. I felt very excited but also scared and hesitant. I didn’t really know what to expect. What would being in such a large crowd of people feel like? When I arrived I was overwhelmed by the amazing energy in the air. All around me, people were sharing chants and holding banners and flags together. I went with two friends and left with many more. I ended up having the most amazing time, dancing through the streets to loud music and feeling lifted up by a crowd of people fighting for the same dream. Above all, I left with hope for a better world. In a world where so many feel hopeless, alone and scared for the future, let’s not forget these moments of unity. When we are together, we are beyond powerful. I hope that you join us this Sunday and can feel this too.
