Beverly Joubert Instagram - We didn't know it at the time this photo was captured, but this special leopard – her eyes alive with curiosity and wonder – would have a massive impact on our lives and careers. This is Legadema, the star of our film Eye of the Leopard. We spent over three years filming and documenting her growth from wide-eyed cub to confident huntress. She let us into her secretive world and helped fuel our passion to protect Africa's threatened wild cats. Although Legadema is no longer with us, her legacy lives on. This #WorldWildlifeDay, we're reflecting on the special time we spent with her, and renewing our dedication to protect our planet's precious wild species and spaces.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Leopards hold a very special place in our hearts. Decades spent documenting these big cats in the wild has offered us a glimpse into their ultra-secretive worlds, a tiny window into the mystery and wonder of these elusive animals.

From the relative safety of a broken tree trunk, this leopardess carefully scanned her surroundings, her stare unwavering as she searched for potential prey in the dusk. We feel an enormous sense of privilege for every moment we get to share with these cats. This International Leopard Day, we’re reminded of their majesty and the urgent need to protect them.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Welcome to our next iLCP Takeover — iLCP Senior Fellow @beverlyjoubert

“Hi all, I’m Beverly Joubert (@BeverlyJoubert), a wildlife photographer and National Geographic Explorer-at-Large. I’m thrilled to be taking over as guest editor for @ilcp_photographers this week to share the remarkable landscapes and magnificent wildlife of Botswana, an area that @DereckJoubert and I have called our second home for many years.

Water is the lifeblood of Botswana's north, and each year as floodwaters from the Angolan Highlands spill onto the flatlands, they saturate the parched soil and transform the landscape, creating the world's largest freshwater inland delta. Elephants are almost synonymous with the Okavango. These enormous animals carve pathways through the floodplains as they trace its snaking channels and spillways.

Massive mammals have massive hydration needs and elephants must drink at least 150 litres of water a day to sustain their huge bodies. As herds trek through the drenched landscape, they forge trails in their wake creating passage for other animals that need to navigate through the dense reeds and thick vegetation. Myriad species depend on the services of these grey giants and even though their populations remain stable in the Delta, poaching and habitat loss still pose a significant threat to the future of this iconic species.” -@beverlyjoubert

Beverly Joubert Instagram - There's a special elegance and grace reserved for giraffes. That silhouette, unmistakable against a golden sky, floats with purpose and poise across the savannah. Their unique form has awed visitors to Africa for centuries, but like so many other species, giraffes are in trouble. Populations have plummeted by 40% in just the last 30 years, and there are now fewer than 70,000 mature individuals left in the wild. We know what must be done to save them: prioritise conservation efforts, safeguard habitats, address threats like illegal hunting. If we don't act now, we stand to lose these iconic creatures forever.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - “Driven by an urge that cannot be ignored, these zebras journey over 250 kilometres each year from the grasslands of the Okavango Delta to the expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the south.

Their migration begins in November/December and is triggered by the rains which transform the bleach-white salt pans into a seemingly endless mirror-like plain. The opportunity to photograph these striking animals from the air, set against the vast spread of the shimmering flatlands, is a true privilege – and one that wouldn't have been possible before the turn of the century.

In the late 1960s, veterinary fences were erected across much of the country to avoid the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, cutting off ancient migratory routes. When the fences were moved in the mid-2000s, conservationists were startled to see the zebras returning to their migratory patterns. It's a stark reminder of the impact we can have on the natural world and the resilience of wildlife in ever-changing landscapes.” - @beverlyjoubert

Beverly Joubert Instagram - I've always been in awe of the sheer power and presence of elephants. While spending time with these giants you learn to appreciate the delicate application of that immense strength. A carefully directed blast of water from a trunk provides relief from the scorching African sun, while pillar-like legs are used to dig into the sand when rivers run dry. Their movements are purposeful and intricate fuelled by an intelligence and social cohesion that we are yet to fully understand. Although, we don't speak their language and can only deduce the motivations for their behaviour, we can respect and admire their sentience. And do everything we can to protect them.⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Lions spend much of their time dozing, reserving their energy for nighttime pursuits. Watching them laze in the heat of the day, often splayed out in languid bliss, it's easy to forget just how powerful and formidable these cats can be when the situation calls for it. These two males—one young and inexperienced, the other a dominant force—clashed over territorial rights. Although the skirmish was brief (as these disagreements often are) it was explosive: teeth bared and muscles tensed, the cats wrestled in the swirling dust, their growls and snarls breaking the stillness of the evening. The dispute was settled quickly, the older victor laying claim to the turf while the youngster was forced to skulk away in defeat. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Following a territorial tussle with a rival male, this dominant duo basked in the last light of the day, confident that they had successfully defended their turf. In a highly competitive and harsh environment like theirs, the key to survival often lies in alliances. The challenges of accessing resources, securing territory, and achieving genetic success are amplified when faced alone. Male lion coalitions are frequently forged between siblings, but they can also develop between unrelated cats, out of necessity and mutual advantage. The daily struggles of lion life become much more manageable when shared.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - While some mammal societies are governed by force and aggression, these traits do not always define leadership. In elephant herds, it's the most knowledgeable and experienced females that guide the group, and they usually carry out this role with patience and tenderness. Years of foraging have taught these leaders where to access water and food and it's their job to lead the rest of the family to these vital resources. Without these wise giants to provide stability and calm, elephant societies could crumble.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - For social animals, wisdom and strength often come from matriarchs. In elephant societies, the most knowledgeable and experienced females take up leadership roles, using their years of wisdom to guide the rest of the herd to food or water. Their importance to the stability of the group is immeasurable. Without them, the intricate bonds that hold the herd together may crumble.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On South Africa’s National Women’s Day, we honour the powerful female leaders who guide their herds through challenges and protect future generations – both in the animal kingdom and in our own lives.⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Standing tall. In the fiery glow of a Kenyan sunset, these giraffes kept their eyes fixed on the horizon. Long-distance surveying is a perk that comes with being Africa's tallest mammals, but even giraffes are prone to attacks from opportunistic predators. As darkness sets in, the herd must find a safe spot to settle where they're able to scan for approaching threats. Giraffes rarely graze or travel on their own, preferring to move in herds that provide safety in numbers and more eyes sweeping their landscape for lurking predators. ⁣

Giraffe societies are about more than just safety though. Herds are cooperative and interdependent and, much like elephants, older matriarchs play a vital role imparting knowledge to the next generation. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Some years ago, we were fortunate to spent time with this gorgeous female leopard named Fig as she raised her cub on the plains of the Maasai Mara. A frightening clash with lions left Fig wary of rival cats, so we often found her in the safety of the treetops resting in the boughs and occasionally using her lofty vantage point to launch aerial attacks on prey. This wisdom was passed on her cub, and the youngster quickly learned to use trees to her advantage. Vital knowledge that she'll no doubt need one day to survive.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - The chaos of the crossing. Each year, millions of ungulates charge across the East African plains in search of fresh grazing grounds, trekking across vast savannahs and weaving their way through predator-rich woodlands. Perhaps their greatest challenge involves negotiating multiple river crossings where steep banks, opportunistic crocodiles and dangerous, churning waters sometimes combine. Predators like lions have learnt to take advantage of these natural obstacles, striking in the midst of the frenzy, often picking off the weaker members of the herd. It can be tough to watch these moments, but it's a reminder of the delicate balance of life in the wild, where savagery and survival are deeply intertwined.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Trees are more than just resting spots for leopards; they provide cover from danger and a safe place to stash a kill where it's beyond the reach of eager scavengers. This cat hastily hauled her warthog kill into the safety of the boughs, but kept a lookout for any rivals on the horizon. Competition for food is tough in the African bush, and wily predators like leopards are only too aware of the looming threat of losing a meal.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Motherhood in the animal kingdom is a testament to resilience, teaching, and unwavering care – every lick, nuzzle, and watchful gaze shapes the future of the next generation. This serval mom's gentle grooming helps keep her kitten's fur clean and free from parasites but it also reinforces the powerful bond between mother and offspring – a connection that can be felt across multiple species in the wild. Servals may not get as much of the limelight as their larger feline relatives, but these elegant, long-legged cats play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. With their incredible hunting skills and success rate, they help control populations of rodents and other small mammals. This wide-eyed kitten will grow up to be an important part of a delicate web of life that deserves to be protected.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - A lion's roar commands attention. Specially adapted vocal folds allow these cats to muster up a reverberating bellow that can be heard from kilometres away. If you're close enough, you'll feel the vibrations of the call rolling through your bones and likely triggering the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up straight. It's a sound we've come to love and appreciate during our time documenting these apex predators. Sadly, we have also witnessed this iconic sound fading from more and more corners of the African wild. We stand to lose so much more than just a roar if we allow these cats to vanish.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - The lure of a well-positioned vantage point usually proves irresistible to cheetahs – they are drawn to termite mounds or fallen trees as though driven by an innate instinct. In the stillness of the savannah, these two brothers clambered onto a tree stump to survey their vast kingdom. For male cheetahs, forming coalitions greatly increases their chances of survival. It means extra eyes to scan for threats and an increased chance of success when on the hunt. Their bond is unbreakable, a partnership forged by survival and trust in a world where every day is a test of resilience.⁣

Myriad species depend on the services of these grey giants and even though their populations remain stable in the Delta, poaching and habitat loss still pose a significant threat to the future of this iconic species.” -@beverlyjoubert Join us this week to learn all about Beverly’s work in the Okavango Delta! _______ #ilcp #ilcp_photographers #wildlifephotography #okavangodelta #africanwildlife #conservationphotography

Beverly Joubert - 7.8K Likes - There's a special elegance and grace reserved for giraffes.

Beverly Joubert - 7.5K Likes - “Driven by an urge that cannot be ignored, these zebras journey over 250 kilometres each year from the grasslands of the Okavango Delta to the expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the south.

Beverly Joubert - 5.8K Likes - Following a territorial tussle with a rival male, this dominant duo basked in the last light of the day, confident that they had successfully defended their turf.

⁣
Giraffe societies are about more than just safety though. Herds are cooperative and interdependent and, much like elephants, older matriarchs play a vital role imparting knowledge to the next generation. ⁣

Their association with death and their affinity for carrion should not be vilified, but rather celebrated – without vultures and other scavengers, savannahs might be strewn with disease-riddled carcasses and those harmful pathogens pose a risk to everything from rodents to humans. This #VultureAwarenessDay, take a moment to appreciate these incredible birds and the crucial role they play in keeping environments healthy.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ #vultures #VultureDay #InternationalVultureDay #wildlife

Eyes set high on their heads help maximise binocular vision, while specially adapted retinas provide a wide-angle view of their surroundings. On the predator-rich plains of Kenya, these cats need every advantage they can get to compete with rivals, and these adaptations help them fulfill a unique ecological niche.⁣

This cat hastily hauled her warthog kill into the safety of the boughs, but kept a lookout for any rivals on the horizon. Competition for food is tough in the African bush, and wily predators like leopards are only too aware of the looming threat of losing a meal.⁣

Beverly Joubert - 3.9K Likes - Motherhood in the animal kingdom is a testament to resilience, teaching, and unwavering care – every lick, nuzzle, and watchful gaze shapes the future of the next generation.

Beverly Joubert - 3.9K Likes - A lion's roar commands attention.

Beverly Joubert - 3.8K Likes - The lure of a well-positioned vantage point usually proves irresistible to cheetahs – they are drawn to termite mounds or fallen trees as though driven by an innate instinct.
