There’s a lot of pressure to get a show with over 80 people on its feet in a short amount of time, but in the midst of that, we always have to remember JOY. Caption : CHEERS and HAPPY OPENING to the cast and creative team for the Broadway revival of for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf. It took a team of powerful warriors to put our show together and I’m so very honored to have worked with them. I am especially grateful for their care, generosity, and support. Lifting up Ntozake Shange’s name and her brilliant work. Thankful to have contributed to her legacy and honored to have taken the dive into her “choreopoem”. Lifting up, Katherine Dunham. She was the first Black woman to direct and choreograph on Broadway over 65 years ago. It was hard to imagine I would ever get the chance to do this because I had never lived to see it. The fear was real. I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t think I could do it. My family and friends surrounded me with their love and helped me push through the fear. It has been a journey and they were with me the entire way. LOVE and GRATITUDE to Dianne McIyntre, Trazana Beverley, Sharrata Hunt, Aku Kadogo, Janet League, Paula Moss, Michele Shay, and Carol Maillard!!! Members of the original Broadway production attended previews last week and are pictured with the cast. Amara Granderson, Tendayi Kuumba, Kenita R. Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Sargeant, Alexandria Wailes, and D. Woods. We THANK YOU for your power and for inspiring us! Every person involved in this production is listed on slides 5 & 6. There isn’t enough room for all the names so I had to get creative! It takes a team!!!! THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WORK!!!! Honoring the legacy of this piece and all the iterations that have come before. This is my offering and it’s for colored girls everywhere. LES GO! Performance photos by Marc J. FranklinLikes : 2660

Caption : Congratulations to the class of 2023!!! A very special shout out to the students of @uncsa and @drewuniversity . I had the pleasure of being the commencement speaker for both institutions. I am also extremely honored to receive Honorary Doctorates from both schools! An Honorary Degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from UNCSA and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Drew University. THANK YOU to UNCSA (my Alma Mater- full circle!!) and Drew University for the love and support you’ve given me over the past 2 weekends!!! Special thanks to Chancellor Brian Cole, Endalyn Taylor (Dean of Dance), Ralph Womble, Provost Patrick Sims, Lissy Garrison of UNCSA, and President Thomas Schwarz, Vice President for University Advancement, Bret Silver, Director and Assistant Professor of Dance in the Theatre and Dance Department, @kimani0402 of Drew University. It was a special treat to share these experiences with my mom and dad🤎 To support what I wanted to share and to make this experience a community engagement with the students, I reached out to the classes and asked them to share questions about navigating life after graduation. I wanted my speeches to be guided by them, to help them maybe overcome their fears, and live out their hopes and dreams. I’ve always been afraid to speak in public because my voice sounded different from everyone else’s. I would get teased and mimicked when I was younger. Because of that, public speaking has always been very scary. So THANK YOU to both institutions for giving me an opportunity to push through the fear and to grow! To the class of 2023, KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND BE BRAVE!!!!! Shout out to @domorisseau and @salamishah who received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Michigan and Moore College of Art & Design respectively. And @herenowdance who graduated from NYU Silver School of Social Work. MSW. Styled by @jakesokoloff Photos by UNCSA and Drew UniversityLikes : 2426

Caption : HAPPY OPENING to the cast, creative team, and production crew of Hippest Trip- The Soul Train musical- Written by @domorisseau Directed by @kamilahf Music Supervision, Orchestrations, and Arrangements by @kennyjseymour , and Choreographed by cab ☺️ My parents remember the very first airing of Soul Train. It was the first time they had seen reflections of themselves moving and grooving in a space all their own that shined with excellence. They passed their love for the show onto me. It had a tremendous impact on my love of social dance and how it is history in motion. It has been my honor to be the choreographer for this musical, to celebrate the legacy of Soul Train, to lift up the incomparable dancers who moved with bold creativity and innovation, celebrate the African diasporic language, and to create in a space filled with both joy and rigor. Kamilah and Dominique have always been inspirations to me as Black women navigating the arts, but to be in the space of collaboration with them has truly lifted and encouraged my spirit. I thank them for their sisterhood. Shout out to my team @adesolaosakalumi and @rickeytripp . Thank you for your love, your laughter, and your care. Thank you for having my back and always lookin out. I love us. Shout out to the amazing @zanemark . I am so thankful for your love and support. Thank you @moncelldurden for being with us during the early stages. To the cast, thank you for putting ALL of yourselves in the space every time- for trusting the destination and always being so encouraging throughout the process. Your affirmations helped me so much! Special thanks to Richard Gay, Jeffrey Tick, Matt Weaver, Tony Cornelius, and Pam Brown. Thank you for the journey and inspiration. Cheers to the cast of Hippest Trip for keeping the legacy alive and cheers to all those souls who kept Soul Train alive for so many decades. This show is a celebration of legacy. IT’S TIME TO GET DOWN as we lift it up! Shouting out @rickeytripp (Associate Choreographer) and @maleek_washington (Assistant Choreographer) to the rafters!!! Thank you for your love, support, and teamwork. Love you both so much. Congratulations to the creative team, @metoperachorus @metoperaballet @metoperaactors @metoperastagemanagers and everyone who contributed to this show. Photographer @jodyrogac Dress by @proenzaschouler Jewelry by @patriciavonmusulin On With the Show “The return this year of live performances wasn’t just welcome, it was transformative, as actors, dramatists, dancers, musicians, comedians, and artists of all stripes returned to the stage—and the intimacy of in-person audiences—with a new urgency…The first Black woman to both choreograph and direct a Broadway show in more than 65 years, Brown made subtle changes, switching out Martha and the Vandellas for “I’m So Into You” by @officialswv . She added Shange’s poem “Ego” from nappy edges…for colored girls transmits rejuvenation.”Likes : 1935

Caption : Contributing my voice to @terence_blanchard ’s beautiful and haunting music for Fire Shut Up In My Bones @metopera conducted by @nezetseguin , creating movement language for Kasi Lemmons’ libretto, sharing the story of celebrated writer @charlesmblow , and co-directing with James Robinson, with whom I had the pleasure of working on Porgy and Bess, has been a dream. As director, I wanted to play with abstraction and time travel, capturing the psyche of Charles, his inner turmoil, and his tussles with Destiny and Loneliness. We treated each scene as though it were one of those aged Polaroid pictures—static in time, with the only breath being Charles, walking us through his journey, the pictures shapeshifting as we follow him. Isolated both spiritually and physically, it was important to show Charles’ struggles, his longing for peace, and his search for a savior—only to realize that his savior was himself, the younger version of himself, giving him grace and resolve. Fire illuminates themes of perseverance and resilience—both hallmarks of the Black experience. We don’t break, we sway. We never give in. I am humbled and honored to be a part of this show that is inviting audiences into a vulnerable and poignant story. At one point in history, Black people were not allowed to perform on the Met stage, and even more so, were not able to authentically portray our own narratives. The full spectrum of our real lives were unseen. But we did not break. Once invisible, now beautifully and vibrantly visible. Past, present, and future, we sway.
