DIGGING By Seamus Heaney Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. Under my window, a clean rasping sound When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: My father, digging. I look down Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds Bends low, comes up twenty years away Stooping in rhythm through potato drills Where he was digging. The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft Against the inside knee was levered firmly. He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep To scatter new potatoes that we picked, Loving their cool hardness in our hands. By God, the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man. My grandfather cut more turf in a day Than any other man on Toner’s bog. Once I carried him milk in a bottle Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up To drink it, then fell to right away Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods Over his shoulder, going down and down For the good turf. Digging. Caption : Birthday feature announcement 📣 🤩 Having blown audiences away at various Poet’s Palace events over the last year with her graceful and poignant poetry, there is no better time have Georgia Lock feature at our 2nd birthday 🥳 🎤 Georgia is an actor who began her career at 12 years old on CBBC and has been in the industry since. Finding solace in poetry in an unpredictable industry, she was reading a lot and thought she’d try writing some of her own. She kept them hidden in notebooks until winning a competition in 2019 to have a collection of her poetry published, which gave her the confidence to start sharing her writings online. Originally inspired mostly by themes of love and relationships, her poetry now has more emphasis on mental health and the gentle magic of the everyday. Finding those pockets of wonder in what could be considered simple things is something Georgia finds extremely comforting and exciting about poetry and the power of language. Caption : Amongst other things that changed overnight when OCD arrived, I couldn’t really eat for a while. It formed a ball in my throat that wouldn’t budge, I lost a lot of weight pretty quick. Felt so stressed and guilty (OCD guilt is gross ew) that I physically felt unable to eat, and then as I gradually got a little better to a place where I felt I physically could, OCD began shifting into themes which would affect my eating so mentally it was harder, what if I was suddenly seriously allergic to something? what if my hands were covered in poisonous chemicals and it’s dangerous to touch food? What if eating this makes me a bad person? What if what if what if – of course, the irony of all these varying what ifs ultimately show that it’s not actually about them at all. It’s not about food or chemicals or potential allergies – it’s about OCD. And OCD is about not being able to tolerate doubt. And OCD talks gosh darn trash. I’ve started trying to think more with my body and just move – I can’t really explain it but I find it helps a bit. I couldn’t really walk for a long time with OCD either, and envisaging putting my brain in my legs and just focussing on putting one foot in front of the other I find sort of helps. Thinking with action not with feeling. Anyway. Here’s to eating mangoes. And to whatever you want. And to saying ciao to OCD in the process.💛 #nocdpoetrycontest #ocdawareness #ocdLikes : 3

Caption : It was New Year’s Eve and actor Georgia Lock’s world was about to turn upside down & change forever. In the blink of an eye, as the clock passed midnight, Georgia’s (as she puts it) “brain broke”. What followed was a cascade of intrusive thoughts, anxiety, worry, compulsions and fear. She didn’t feel like she could trust her mind or believe she could ever recover. Fortunately, Georgia was relatively quickly diagnosed with OCD and her healing journey could begin. Thinking with action not with feeling. Going against ocd really feels like a battle with your mind. We know the thought is illogical and false, but the fear it creates is very real and that makes it difficult to disregard. Going against it can feel deeply distressing but also empowering and monumentous! (which isn’t a real word but you get me) and it’s funny how we can have such an intense war with ourselves, an internal storm, and on the outside it can’t be seen at all and the air is still. Eating is a lottttt easier now. Don’t really have any issues with it at all anymore. Cooking is still hard, contamination OCD is still a pretty prevalent theme (blimin weird because it wasn’t a theme I experienced at all at first but ocd be like that hey) Anyway. Here’s to eating what we wanna eat. Yum. (In truth, I was actually eating a banana when I wrote this, but there’s just something poetic about mangoes, no? 😅) Hope you’re good, G xx #ocd #ocdawarenessLikes : 3
