Still a lot of practice to do before I would dare risk a cycle lane, but this week felt like I went back to my childhood and completed some unfinished business. Natalie Gumede Instagram - Today, May 25th, marks what would have been my father’s 71st birthday. He died back in 1995 when I was 10 and he was only 45 years old. Being closer now to his age at passing, plus this current pandemic has placed him at the forefront of my mind in recent weeks. I didn’t know much of him, and lots of what I did know wasn’t healthy...but. I’ve found myself revisiting the grief as an adult I couldn’t process as a child (with incredible help 💛). He died alone, and I know so many families are navigating that right now. I’m with you. And I’m so very sorry for your pain. It feels unbearable. But if you stay with it, it softens you. And all I can hope when life returns to some kind of normal is that we stay tender. Because for every hug, and touch we miss from the ones we love, more than anything we need to really. SEE each other. And if you can’t see on the surface - look. There’s good stuff in there. My dad liked sunflowers. So I bought one today. And god knows I’m a plant killer but right now I need to see something bloom. So here we are. There’s some buds under the flower I look forward to seeing blossom. Natalie Gumede Instagram - Today, May 25th, marks what would have been my father’s 71st birthday. He died back in 1995 when I was 10 and he was only 45 years old. Being closer now to his age at passing, plus this current pandemic has placed him at the forefront of my mind in recent weeks. I didn’t know much of him, and lots of what I did know wasn’t healthy...but. I’ve found myself revisiting the grief as an adult I couldn’t process as a child (with incredible help 💛). He died alone, and I know so many families are navigating that right now. I’m with you. And I’m so very sorry for your pain. It feels unbearable. But if you stay with it, it softens you. And all I can hope when life returns to some kind of normal is that we stay tender. Because for every hug, and touch we miss from the ones we love, more than anything we need to really. SEE each other. And if you can’t see on the surface - look. There’s good stuff in there. My dad liked sunflowers. So I bought one today. And god knows I’m a plant killer but right now I need to see something bloom. So here we are. There’s some buds under the flower I look forward to seeing blossom. Natalie Gumede Instagram - What sad news to hear today…Len Goodman was one of the people who defined my time on Strictly ten years ago. OLD SKOOL - he was a stickler for technique, and because of that, he was the only judge I really wanted to impress every week. He sometimes clashed professionally with my dance partner over choreography, but that really spoke to Len’s passion for the traditions of ballroom dance - he knew more than any of us could dream of learning. The feedback I got from Len was sometimes mixed, but he championed me towards the end, and I deeply respected him. This (admittedly grainy) photo was taken backstage at the live tour, after he collared me to discuss one of my dances from early on in the competition. He told me he had been suspicious of me throughout the TV show because of a step I had executed in my rumba - too well for week four, in his opinion. I shared how I had been drilled on that single step for four hours one Sunday afternoon, and realising the work I had put in, he nodded, smiled, winked at me and squeezed my arm - that small acknowledgment meant so much after what had been a challenging experience on the show. His elegance elevated every room he entered, and his presence will be sorely missed. Now he gets to dance with the real stars….⭐️ #lengoodman

I’ve spent a lot of time feeling incredibly overwhelmed. And I’ve sometimes questioned whether I’m up to performing at this level. Natalie Gumede Instagram - Qwabe - a Kingdom in the KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where the Qwabe/Gumede tribe originated. I named this poem Qwabe as I thought upon where I had come from in order to feel more grounded in myself, and ultimately to know where I want to go and what I want to be a part of. It was also to tie in with the IG live I did with @poeticunity, honouring their theme of the week; ‘Black and British.’ What started as a poem explaining myself unfolded into some discovery of self. Being closer now to his age at passing, plus this current pandemic has placed him at the forefront of my mind in recent weeks. I didn’t know much of him, and lots of what I did know wasn’t healthy...but. I’ve found myself revisiting the grief as an adult I couldn’t process as a child (with incredible help 💛). He died alone, and I know so many families are navigating that right now. I’m with you. And I’m so very sorry for your pain. It feels unbearable. But if you stay with it, it softens you. And all I can hope when life returns to some kind of normal is that we stay tender. Because for every hug, and touch we miss from the ones we love, more than anything we need to really. This (admittedly grainy) photo was taken backstage at the live tour, after he collared me to discuss one of my dances from early on in the competition. He told me he had been suspicious of me throughout the TV show because of a step I had executed in my rumba - too well for week four, in his opinion. I shared how I had been drilled on that single step for four hours one Sunday afternoon, and realising the work I had put in, he nodded, smiled, winked at me and squeezed my arm - that small acknowledgment meant so much after what had been a challenging experience on the show. I named this poem Qwabe as I thought upon where I had come from in order to feel more grounded in myself, and ultimately to know where I want to go and what I want to be a part of. It was also to tie in with the IG live I did with @poeticunity, honouring their theme of the week; ‘Black and British.’ What started as a poem explaining myself unfolded into some discovery of self. Creativity usually leaves gifts like that ❤️❤️You can check out my conversation with @ragzcv on @poeticunity’s page - I share the poem about 40 minutes in. @poeticunity are doing incredible work supporting young people and bringing mental health issues into the light through the platform of poetry. Everyone who shares their work is welcomed, honoured and supported, and has their voice heard.
