Goed nieuws: ik heb de 100% bereikt op voordekunst.nl. Mijn dank is groot! Ook ontving ik heel veel lieve, leuke berichtjes - zo ontzettend fijn om te weten dat niet alleen ik heel opgewonden word van dit project, maar velen met mij.

21 maart as. vertrek ik naar Houston, Texas om daar mijn reis te beginnen. Welke motels zijn geschikt, welke motel eigenaren zijn goede verhalenvertellers en wat voor soort receptionist past op die specifieke plek?

Vervolgens zal ik op 2 april mijn lieve team, bestaande uit Maarten van Rossem @mvrossem (cameraman), Mark Wessner @markwessner (geluidsman), Sandra Govers @sandragovershairandmakeup (make-up artist) en Sam Verberne @sam.verberne (assistent), oppikken in Las Vegas. We hebben dan precies 1 maand de tijd om de filmische zelfportretten te schieten. Van hardwerkende moeder met 3 banen en evenveel kinderen tot rijke dame die af en toe wat werkt om de tijd te doden - allemaal hoop ik ze een plek te geven in The Receptionist.

Wil je graag op de hoogte blijven van het project, dan kan dat het makkelijkst via Instagram of Facebook. Ik zal daar updates posten en vragen beantwoorden.

Robin de Puy Instagram - Emily (6), Twin Falls, Idaho 💕

Drowned in dark thoughts I wander through a big Walmart in Twin Falls, Idaho. It is the intense gaze of a young girl that brings me back to earth. In times of despair, the look of the kid is comforting as well as painful: the ultimate imagination of innocence, which only a child can show. Sitting in a shopping cart, being pushed by her big sister, the world is passing by.

I would love to photograph the girl. I nervously approach them, scared of being rejected. “Is your mom here too?”, I ask. “She's in the restroom, but she will be back soon”, the sister says. Meanwhile, the bright blue eyes of the little girl are staring right through me. I try to keep the conversation going, without appearing to be a creepy stalker. When the mother joins us, the big sister has already found me on Instagram and wants to take a selfie with me. Mom is keeping an appropriate distance and I see her – understandable – concerns. I give her my phone number and await. Not much later I receive the message I was hoping for: “You can come over.”

The name of the girl is Emily. Her intellectual disability sometimes makes things harder, but because of the loving presence of big sister Kenzie (15), brother Lucas (8), mom Ashley (40) and dog Piper she can move quite carelessly through life. In contradiction with a lot of struggling parents, her mom has, with the help of school and doctors, paved the way through the complex American bureaucracy with as a result a happy, healthy kid in school. “Without the help, I could not have done it.”

Like a little kitten, Emily plays in the grass. Continuously she is approaching me closer and closer, followed by running away or hiding in her pink jacket. Everything is sweet about her. Her light, fine hair, the breadcrumbs on her chin, the small hands which are holding a (still frozen) peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the nearly rolling tear that arises because of the wind and the accompanying booger.
An innocent child. Freely she rolls through the grass, and I roll with her. I want nothing more than to forget or not know – it works.

Robin de Puy Instagram - Coming February 1st, it will have been 70 years ago since the biggest Dutch natural disaster of the 20th century occurred.

A heavy North Western storm combined with a spring tide caused a flood of big parts of The Netherlands. On more than 150 places in Zeeland, South-Holland and North-Brabant the dykes broke, because they couldn’t handle the amount of water and had been poorly maintained. Sunday afternoon a second flood wave hit and caused even more victims.

Goeree-Overflakkee is one of the areas that was hit the heaviest as a result of the disaster. Oude-Tonge counts the largest number of victims. Of the in total 1836 victims, 492 died on the island. The livestock were also affected.

The municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee asked the artist Robin de Puy, who grew up in Oude-Tonge, to portray inhabitants of the island that experienced the disaster or grew up in the shadow of the trauma their (grand)parents survived.

Maria Barnes wrote down the stories of the people who lived through the disastrous night and the days after. A-lot of their personal histories overlapped. For some people it was impossible to talk about the disaster for a long time. The word ‘trauma’ didn’t exist yet.

Waters can be read as an evident signal to not look away from climate change and the rapid rising water level. De Puy and Barnas are attempting to present this tragedy, that was often carried in solitude, as something mutual.

Robin de Puy Instagram - Robin as The Receptionist, Ely, Nevada

For her new project The Receptionist, De Puy dives into the role of motel/hotel receptionist. Having grown up in a hotel herself, she knows the role of the receptionist all too well, because it is something she has done since childhood. Many people have shared their stories with her: where they have come from, and what they have experienced. Sometimes, it is not so much about the stories as it is about the contact itself; finally, someone who will listen to you.

A motel owner from Raton, New Mexico, casually pointed the importance of motels out to De Puy: "You know, you have to realize that we are probably the only representatives to our city for a visitor. Because they stay with us and probably have no contact with anyone else, except maybe the guy at the gas station or the staff at the restaurant. In fact, we have a responsibility to make sure that we can help people, be their friend, whatever their needs are. We are connected."

And that is exactly how it feels for De Puy and what still rings true to her. A motel — or a hotel — is a place where there will always be someone there to lend an ear if you need one, regardless of your ideas, views, or opinions. When De Puy travels, she actually does the same thing. She first goes to the person behind the reception desk of the motel/hotel. A motel is an inexhaustible source of stories, a place where you can be curious, where you can withdraw or reveal yourself. Sometimes it is even a place where life begins or even ends.  
The Receptionist is an ode to the hotel industry and everyone working in it.

Instead of the expected pregnant teenager, a very skinny man opens the door. "Come in." He moves slowly, and I'm surprised he can still walk.

Discreetly, I try to sit on an open plastic bag so that my bare legs don't touch the chair's grubby seat. I’m embarrassed by my behavior, and as a compromise, I smile particularly kindly at the man. His name is John. By now, he - like many others - has been living here for a few years, waiting for a better life. "Do you happen to know if a pregnant girl lives here?" I ask him. "Two doors down." Everyone knows everybody. Motels here are like villages.

Robin de Puy Instagram - CAROL (22), LAWTON, OKLAHOMA.

'Spoiler alert: Jesus wins,' a roadside sign reads. I don't know what exactly Jesus would define as winning, because I haven't seen much I would consider prize-winning over the past few days.

We are driving through the small town of Lawton, Oklahoma. It's seven in the evening. The sun is low, but it's still well over 40 degrees Celsius. The streets are empty except for a few cars. Hardly anyone is out here for fun. There is no need to be because there is a drive-through for everything: besides ordering food and drinks, you can also withdraw cash, pick up medication, buy cigarettes, weed, or alcohol, get a new tire, or even an oil change, all from the comfort of your air-conditioned — or not — car.

Since most people stay in, it is all the more noticeable when someone is out. In the corner of my eye, I see a young girl with a white flapping dress on a little blue bike. I am not reducing anything to patronize, the bike is small. The only thing that is not small is the huge Slurpee cup in her wicker basket on the front of her bike. Her eyes are squinting from the sun that’s still bright; her short, unkempt hair standing upright and sweetly blowing in the almost imperceptible wind.

Her name is Carol. She is 22, and she has been living on the streets for four years now. On her collarbone the words 'awaking my soul from darkness' are written. They refer to her late father who passed away when she was only two. He was 27 years old. The grief is still immense. Very softly she says: "I just miss my dad."

Carol really wants to get a job, but Lawton is a military and university town. That means the jobs go to those that study or that are affiliated with the military. There is no one to look after her, no one to comfort her, no one to really see or help her. "It's hard to find help in this country.” The only places Carol can get food are the Salvation Army or the church. If this is what Jesus would mean by winning, he has won.

After I take her photo, she cycles off. She bravely defies the bright sun. Her shadow makes her bigger than anyone else; she just doesn't know it herself.

From the interstate, I see a dilapidated, yellow motel flash by on my right. I don’t really feel like stopping, but the fear of missing out takes over. When I park my car a little later, I spot a pregnant girl hanging in the doorway of her room in the distance. I try to remember her room number, but - unsurprisingly - end up standing in front of the wrong door. Instead of the expected pregnant teenager, a very skinny man opens the door. “Come in.” He moves slowly, and I’m surprised he can still walk.

John’s is his name. By now, he - like many others - has been living here for a few years, waiting for a better life. “Do you happen to know if a pregnant girl lives here?” I ask him. “Two doors down.” Everyone knows everybody. Motels here are like villages.

Savannah (18) has been living in this room with her two siblings, father, boyfriend, two dogs, and a lizard-like animal for two years. Before this, they did motel-hopping, and before that, they lived in a car.

“How did you guys end up in this situation?” I ask them.

The stories that follow are not only too big for a few small paragraphs, but certainly for the short lives of these young people. There is much suffering to be found in this 12m2 motel room. From being born into addiction, to maternal death from diabetes. From not wanting to live to not being able to live the way you want. From a kid having a kid to a dad wanting to die.

In the evening, Savannah asks if I want to photograph her in the bathtub. The bathroom walls are clammy. The bathtub rim is slippery. I stand on my toes and press my buttocks firmly against the wall, hoping my feet won’t show in the frame below me. Savannah is floating in the water calmly and seemingly carefree. Her self-made pink dress clings to her porcelain skin. The sharp nails surround what she holds dear. “I am terrified, but everything will be okay.”

Robin de Puy Instagram - New episode! #linkinbio

Caddo Lake is as smooth as a mirror’s surface and filled with large yellow flowers proudly reaching for the sun. “When the flower has finished blooming, the fruit remains, '' says Chaz (38), born and raised in Uncertain, a small village bordering the lake. He picks up a ripe piece of fruit: “Here, have you ever tasted this?” Without hesitation, I bite into the sweet seeds of the American lotus.

Uncertain is on the border of Texas and Louisiana. It has 85 inhabitants and is buried deep in swampland. Large moss-covered cypress trees give the village a somewhat ghostly appearance. The town is perfect for anyone who does not want to be found. People take care of their own business here and help from outsiders is not welcomed.

“The lake raised me. I am a real swamp-rat.” Chaz's beard blows gently in the wind. “We have everything we need here: water, food, and medicine. Life doesn't come from a store. It starts in nature.” It sounds like paradise, and I would rather not leave.

When I ask Chaz who I should definitely meet here, he immediately replies, “Dottie! She used to be my teacher and she's the SuperWoman from Uncertain.”

Before long, I found her. Dottie is 83 years old and still likes to ride her Harley Davidson, sometimes with a cape - she is SuperWoman, after all. She clearly loves life as well as her raccoon, Willow, who is always perched on her neck or in her lap.

Dottie owns a lot of land, including a small graveyard. “Always wanted one.” It came in handy when her husband Billy passed away last year. Wrapped up with cloth, he was six feet under within twelve hours. He thought he was dying of an infection because he had given a baby raccoon mouth-to-mouth, but Dottie disagrees.

“The average age of an Uncertainer is only 58. Fresh vegetables are hard to find here. And almost all of the food is deep-fried. Combined with frequent use of alcohol and cigarettes, it doesn't appear to be the best way to grow old. And then there's something about mercury in the water.”

Mouths full of American lotus seeds and acclaimed scenery, yet it’s less like paradise after all. As it turns out: nothing is certain in Uncertain.

Pretty Close To A Million.

I spot an old, blue Dodge pickup truck under a blue, sun-scorched neon sign that says, 'The Maverick Motel.' In the empty lot, a lady — in a blue shirt — sits under a canopy. My photography heart leaps at the perfect confluence of all that blue.

"Can I maybe take your picture?" I ask her. "Yes, of course," she replies with a distinct voice in a dialect still unfamiliar to me. In the distance, I notice a man stepping out — also dressed in blue. It turns out to be her husband Nick.
Nick starts talking from afar, and from that point on my toes barely touch the ground. I float in a blue bubble carried by Nick's sentences. Virtually all of them sound like iconic anecdotes ending with an exclamation point, supported by affirming — or dissenting — sounds from his wife. The dialect turns out to be from the former Yugoslavia.

I often receive questions such as: Do you also photograph individuals? Can you photograph my (grand)children? I’d like to give my coworker a present, could you photograph him/her/them? I want to surprise my … with a … image –can you take this picture?

The answer to all these questions is: YES!

The portraits can be taken on location (in the water, in your favorite car, painted golden in a meadow, or something less hysterical if preferred) or in the studio. You tell me what you like and I’ll make something out of it.

A makeup artist and / or stylist and a certificate of authenticity (for the collectors among us) are optional.

The following days will be available to have your portrait taken:

Wednesday 7th June
Thursday 8th June
Friday 23rd June
Saturday 24th June

The prize per portrait depends on your wishlist and needs, but everything can be discussed. ✨

Robin de Puy - 2.2K Likes - Lievelingen, in april begin ik aan mijn nieuwe project 'The Receptionist' en ik kan niet wachten. ✨

Voor The Receptionist, duik ik in de rol van motel receptioniste. Ik ben zelf opgegroeid in een hotel, dus ik ken de rol van receptioniste maar al te goed.

Wat is het plan?
Voor mijn nieuwe project The Receptionist zal ik wederom een rondreis maken door de Verenigde Staten (bekijk hier een van mijn eerdere projecten 'If This Is True'). Ik zal diverse motels en plekken bezoeken, en mijzelf iedere keer tot receptioniste omtoveren. Het project wordt een verzameling filmische zelfportretten (18) gecombineerd met beeldmateriaal (foto en video) van werknemers binnen het motel- en hotelwezen. Daarnaast zien we de motels en hun omgeving.

Motels – en de mensen die er werken – weerspiegelen meestal de staat van de wijk/omgeving. Hoe gaat het met het motel? Hoe gaat het met de mensen die er wonen en werken? The Receptionist als weerspiegeling van de huidige maatschappij in Amerika.

Alleen... ik heb nog een beetje hulp nodig om de kosten te dekken en daar kun jij me bij helpen.

In ruil voor jouw hulp, krijg je bijv. een ongepubliceerde Randy of - als je minder te besteden hebt - kun je ook een postkaartje van mij en Randy kopen.

En als je niks kunt missen, dan snap ik dat ook helemaal. Ik vind je sowieso wel lief.
