Charisma, fame, good looks, superhuman physical and artistic achievements. Some people seem to be everything you dream of becoming. And as @coryrichards shares in this interview, everything can be nothing and anything can be the opportunity for presence, mindfulness and connection to who and what matters most. Cory climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in 2016 and was the first and only American to climb one of the world’s 8,000 meter peaks in winter, where he almost died in an avalanche and took one of the most famous photos of his career that became the cover of the 125th anniversary issue of @natgeo. Cory has been a @natgeoadventure of the Year and National Geographic Photographer fellow. His memoir, The Color of Everything, out July 9th, tells the story of his journey with mental health and how it has shaped his life, his path as an adventurer and artist and his decision to walk away from climbing, photography and shed his former identities to move to LA and be a writer. Once I started reading The Color of Everything, I couldn’t put it down and since I finished it, I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a profound, must-read book and I’m sure you’ll see it on many best of the year lists come December. To pre-order the book now, go to the link in bio. Footage courtesy of Cory, @fossil, @nikonusa
ADD and ADHD…let’s talk about it. Book report day! #thecolorofeverything
Trauma…it’s everywhere these days…and it’s easy to get stuck in the story of it. Just some thoughts on our trauma-forward culture. As always, IMO

E08 w/ CORY RICHARDS – Adventure, Mental Health, and Life in The Color of Everything In this episode, @coryrichards takes us on a deep dive into his perception of life as a gift of experiences, and how this ultimately allows us to *choose* what he calls an “insane gratitude” for each of those experiences. This is, according to Cory, “the ultimate reframe.” We, all of us, get to be here, together. Thanks, Cory. E08 is now live across channels, link in bio.
NEVER ENOUGH – listen to E08 with @coryrichards and hear about his journey to understanding the real foundations of love, relevance, and knowing that we matter as humans. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and be sure to pick up a copy of his memoir, The Color of Everything, out now. 📸: cover photo is both by and of @coryrichards, after being buried in an avalanche during a 2011 winter ascent of Gasherbrum II, where he became the first and only American to summit an 8,000m peak in winter.
PERMISSION FOR AUTHENTICITY – “The central layer is really the power of storytelling, and the narratives that we tell, and how they can set us free or they can hold us captive. And sometimes our stories are actually not even accurate anymore. They’re just something that we’ve repeated over and over and over again. And so, you know, the invitation there is to sort of step out for a moment, to relax the grip on the stories we’re telling and examine: Hey, are these harmful or helpful?” Listen to E08 with @coryrichards wherever you get your podcasts, and pick up his new memoir, The Color of Everything.
Thank you for the question. ❤️ Wishing you all a happy Friday. P.S. stay tuned for an exciting announcement next week!
Another tidbit of a larger conversation with @tedhesser discussing searching for my search healing in intensity. We like to exist where we are comfortable – and what’s comfortable for us, is often what we know. Growing up, having a lot of trauma and chaos, that was what I knew. So, of course, in adulthood, I would pursue things that teetered that line. As always, would love to hear your thoughts below 👇
Another great question I got asked and discussed on a recent podcast, with my friend @danbuettner , was about finding the next “right” thing to do? I think it’s more simple than you might imagine. What guides your decision making in finding the next steps in your life ? 👇
Last reading before my memoir, The Color of Everything, comes out. This comes towards the end of the book as I’m starting to unravel some of the things about my journey with bipolar 2 and my mental health and the stories told about it. I will always advocate for the wellness of people. As someone who has openly spoken about their mental health on the internet for some time now, I am an active participant and can see the mostly positive impact that it has made in destigmatization and access to resources. On the flip side, armchair psychology and self-diagnoses have become rampant. While I’m not here to take away from or label anyone’s experience, the reminder is this: Psychology is not so we can stay in victimhood. It’s our way out. Many things in life may not be our fault, but still remain our responsibility. The world will not change for our sensitivities, but we can change and work towards better versions of ourselves. Lastly, if you were thinking or contemplating about my memoir, today is the last day to pre-order (link in bio). Every pre-order helps me so much. I truly cannot begin to express the amount of gratitude I have, not just for every pre-order, but for every comment/like and story shared on this content I’ve been putting out over the last few months. I’m excited to continue sharing on this new adventure with you.
I’ve been wanting to share this for a minute. I think of all the gifts life offers, time is absolutely the most valuable. It’s weird that we use so much of it trying to get or change things that might give us more of it…which of course is a zero-sum game. Nothing is certain and time isn’t for sale. Minutes become hours become days and weeks and months and years and finally, a whole life. Life happens so briefly and somehow we get lost in it and we lose sight of the forest through the trees. Somehow, as we pour over the past or plan for the future, we forget that all of life is literally happening right now. And we miss it. We don’t recognize the horizon we were driving towards because our gaze is still fixed outward. I don’t really know how to tell that story effectively. I don’t know what appreciating a moment really looks like. One second falls away, replaced by another. Like sand in our hands, the tighter we squeeze, the more quickly it falls away. All I know is that it’s special…because so much had to happen exactly as it has to get to now. And here we are. Written and co-directed with the incredible @giovannim with so much appreciation for @vacheronconstantin for all the time they’ve given me as my life has changed while time has changed me. Thank you.
A snippet from my conversation on the podcast @clippingchains Change doesn’t happen overnight. Catastrophic events can be the catalyst for change, but change is a journey. And like any journey, it’s going to have ups and downs and take some time to make progress. In the rest of the episode, we explored a variety of different topics from change, the use of social media, the stories we tell, vulnerability, anger, mental health, and more. I’m always grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences and open up discussions.
