I never got to meet her, but Chita was a huge part of my upbringing as an artist. If Marlene Dietrich could dance like Anne Reinking, was Puerto Rican and had Lucille Ball-like impeccable comedic timing, she’d be Chita. A female dancer in 1950s who ended up originating classics like Chicago, West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie, Sweet Charity movie, Kiss Of The Spiderwoman, The Rink, The Visit. What a life. She spoke to a multi-hyphenated Latino hooffer like me… If you have a chance to read her biography, in every chapter you go “Whatt?! She did that too????” Her accounts on Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon, Kander&Ebb are better than any biopic on these legends. Razzle Dazle ‘em Chita. You’ve enriched my life just by being a captive audience to yours. 🙏🏻
