CLASH memorialises Matt Champion’s foray into solo stardom for Issue 128. Having just released a sci-fi inspired debut album, ‘Mika’s Laundry’, the LA-based musician continues to build on and bring to life the era’s core motifs. This isn’t a tale of perfection or absolutes; the project’s jagged edges and non-sequiturs reveal an artist-in-progress.
Moving away from his role within the contentious rap collective BROCKHAMPTON, Champion is fostering new connections and relying more than ever before on his intrepid instincts. Creatively re-awakened, the interdisciplinary artist is finding joy, purpose and redemption within the dimensions of a studio.
“The recording process is my favourite part of what I do,” Champion affirms. “I’m always, endlessly, going to be thinking or mapping out whatever it is that comes next. That’s my happy place.”
