Michael Moore Instagram – It always brings me great joy when our film festival’s opening night in northern Michigan begins on Stanley Kubrick’s birthday! After a 2-year absence due to Covid, we launched our 16th festival in Traverse City last night with a new film by Abigail Disney & Kathleen Hughes: “The American Dream & Other Fairy Tales”. The perfect film for the moment we are in. I’ve chosen 49 other movies which we’ll show this week, most of them made in and around these pandemic years, most of them never or barely released in theaters for audiences to see the way they should be seen. So many of them already lost gems. My goal with our festival this year is that they must not be lost. They must be seen, not just here in our little town, but by millions across the world. These are the “missed masterpieces” of 2019-2022, not able to enjoy the wide theatrical release they deserved, consigned instead to a list of streaming services who did their best to make them available amongst their long dense list of films you are welcome to scroll through for an hour or two.
We’re also presenting a 50th Anniversary screening of “Harold and Maude” and a 100th Year screening of “Nosferatu” with live musical accompaniment.
