• 68% of Australians in aged care are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition.
• This leads to a range of health risks including increase in falls, fractures, slower rates of healing and increased risk of infection.
• The current average food budget for people in aged care is less than $15 a day.
• Older people need 120g of protein each day.
• According to a review by the National Ageing Research Institute on behalf of Beyond Blue, older Australians in residential aged care facilities are five times more likely than those living independently to experience mental health issues. 49 % of residents in aged care are diagnosed as depressed.
