Boxer 📽 February 16, 1984

Hyderabad was the high point of Mithun’s charisma. He was shooting the climax scenes of ‘Boxer’, and practically every day there were ‘hazaar’ instances to show how much people loved him.  Towards the end of the schedule, director Raj Sippy was to shoot a boxing bout.
They had hired the local stadium and were worried whether they would be able to get a large enough crowd to fill the stands.  Word spread around town that Mithun needed people, and on the morning they were about to shoot the scene, crowds started pouring in.  Women of all ages – schoolgirls, middle-aged and old – men and boys, all flocked to the stadium till it was so packed that there was no place to stand.
At the far end of the stadium, a door opened and Mithun Chakraborty appeared.  The crowd went wild.  He walked to the ring, his arms held up to acknowledge the cheers. The ovation was so deafening it even drowned his thoughts.  The more daring girls blew kisses at him, chanting his name.  As he stepped into the ring, fifteen thousand voices roared in unison.

And Mithun was crying.
