Sam Neill Instagram – Here’s to the great Edna O’Brien . RIP. I got to know her a little bit ; years ago one of my early films was of her The County Girls . She was funny , charming and told great stories . And of course wrote great books . She told me once that when her mother died , she found buried away at the back of a cupboard, the book of The Country Girls that Edna had given her when it was published in 1960. Her mother had not just buried it under a lot of old stuff , she had carefully censored with a pen , any material even slightly risque. Different days in Ireland – all 3 books in the series were banned. Well , she lived to the grand old age of 93 , leaving a great legacy .
